CHAPTER V

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

The study aimed to determine the impacts of playing online games to the

relationship of Ateneo de Naga University Senior High School with their family.

Through this, further study is suggested that entailed how a person can regulate his time

with playing online games and bonding with family.

Online games are rampant these days due to the different contents and themes the

video games companies show. Extreme usage of online games can lead to less time with

family. For this, the better comprehension of the struggles they can lessen their time

playing online games and connect more with their family members.

The study used a qualitative approach to determine how playing online games can

affect one’s relationship with the family and how they are related. The researchers

created a consent form and a survey intended to gather information from the respondents

that would aid the further discussion of the study. After giving out survey and conducting

an interview, the researchers of this study made the final coding and collation of the data

in order to get the desired response to the questions under the statement of the problem.

Through the responses of the chosen participants and the related studies stated in

the review of related literature, most of the evidences exhibited negative impacts of

online gaming to the relationship of Ateneo de Naga Senior High School students with

their family. The students said that playing online games was a means to rest and

recreation; however, the parents and other family members still perceived it as a
32

detrimental phenomenon. Thus, conflicting conventional and modernized perceptions

were still evident in the contemporary times. This also led to the weakened family

relationships; because, the respondents imparted that there were tendencies wherein they

were forbidden to play in order to relax themselves from the stress. Prohibiting them

from engaging in online gaming resorted to make them feel irritated, and even worsen the

stress which made it harder for them to bond more with their family resulting to the

widening of the gap in the relationship.

Recommendations

Having all the results summarized and concluded, this study may be an effective

means to spread awareness and establish greater understanding towards senior high

school students who play online games and their relationship with their family. The

following statements are suggestions and improvements that may be beneficial to the

following:

Respondents

The researchers recommend that the respondents learn to make a schedule for

their playing of online games to ensure that they will balance their time well and have

enough time for other things. The respondents should regulate their online gaming and

spend more time with their family to improve their relationship.

Parents

The researchers recommend that the parents offer moral support to their children

to promote positive reinforcement. In connection, parents should also keep their

children’s online gaming in check and guarantee their safety by making sure that their

child plays in moderation.

33

Other Senior High Students Who Are Online Gamers

These individuals should seek the ways on how to improve their lifestyle. There

should be a balance between online gaming and bonding with family. Online gaming

should not always be the means of rest and recreation, and students should be aware of

the impacts of online gaming to them as individuals, and also to their relationship with

other people, most especially their family.

Ateneo de Naga University Senior High School Students

The Ateneo de Naga Senior High School students should engage more in a study

concerning the concept, advantages and disadvantages of online gaming. In doing so, the

students can actively participate in contributing to the betterment of avid student gamers

by giving them awareness of the possible impacts of online gaming through the thought

concept gained.

School

The school should promulgate policies addressing the overuse of online gaming

so as to prevent any distractions that students may encounter which can affect their

academic performance and holistic growth. A platform concerning online gaming must be

created so the student body is more aware of such matters. It may be in the form of

conducting seminars which tackles online gaming.

Future Researchers

The researchers recommend developing studies related to this by utilizing the data

in this research to create related researches to this with a larger sample population and

also adding other variables and questions that might prove necessary concepts upon the

study of online gaming and its impacts to the relationship with the family.

6 Alysa (A): Good afternoon po, I am Alysa Kristel Asido from HU12, a researcher of the

7 study titled, "Impacts of Playing Online Games to the Relationship of Ateneo de Naga

8 Univerisity Senior High School Students with their Family. Uhm what is your name po?

9 Mark(M): Uhm, my name is Mark, grade 12 student from HU23.

10 A: Is it okay po if we interview you?

11 M: Uh sure.

12 A: Ok so before we start the interview, how are you feeling?

13 M: Uh... stressed pero okay lang.

14 A: Pero graduating na kasi kaya stressed

15 M: Understandable naman

16 A: Yes. I understand you and we're very grateful na pumayag ka sa interview namin

19 A: Ahh you know the feeling.

20 M: Oo

21 A: Thank you so much po uhh ok so let's proceed now with the interview.
47

22 Osher (O): How long do you spend your time in playing online games?

23 M: Uh playing online games kasi pag school days kumbaga, 1 day a week is like mga 3

24 hours ako pero pag summer minsan di natitigil. Minsan nakakasama na.

25 O: How do you perceive or what is you stand about playing online games?

26 M: Uhh may ano kasi yan.

28 effect, may bad ganun.

30 O: What makes playing online games distinct from other means of relaxation?

35 A: So ano parang sinasabi mo ano uhm mas nakakarelax yung ano activity na interactive

39 O: With whom do you prefer playing online games?

44 O: How would you differentiate the experience of playing online games with different
48

45 group of people?

46 A: Like sa family, sa friends, anong pagkakaiba nung experience?

47 M: like iiiba ko yung groups ng tao?

48 A: Oo.

49 M: Kung family, parang I mean, ‘di naman siya baduy pero parang na-pupull back ka

50 kasi ayy nandiyan si mama.

51 A: Limitado yung ano.

52 M: Oo limitado pero ‘pag friends yun nga kilala ko na, trash talk ka na diyan, all that.

53 A: How about yung experience mo sa kapatid mo? ‘Pag naglalaro kayo.

Yun.

58 A: Ohh so may limitations.

59 O: Is your family aware that you are playing online games? How did they know about it?

63 A: I know right.

64 M: Oo, tas yan, “Ano ba kasi kakain nalang” tas yan nalaman nalang nila tas ‘di nila ko

65 ginugulo kasi nga ano naglalaro ko ganun.

66 A: Paano nila na-discover- Ah yun nga. Yung sinabi mong hindi ka kumakain on time,

67 nalelate ka lagi yun lang.

49

68 M: Oo.

70 kaya’t nalelate kang umalis ng room or nalelate kang kumain?

71 M: Ah nilalaro ko talaga is yung mga fighting games.

72 A: Fighting games.

75 prize talaga kaya ganun. Parang dedication ganun.

76 A: Yes, kailangan mo munang aralan.

77 O: What are some of the things that motivate you to play online games?

Ganyan

82 sistema nila.

83 O: Are there people or does your environment influence you in playing online games?

84 How do these influence you?

87 syempre itatry mo kasi masupog man. Yun.

88 O: Why do you engage in playing online games?

89 M: In general?

90 kaya siya like dae ko man tigseryoso tas garo napiritan ako mag-attend ning sarong event
50

Other than that, may iba pa bang reason kung bakit nag-engage

94 ka sa online games?

95 M: Yan, nakaka-enjoy man pero yun nga like na-adik na ko dahill duman sa competition,

96 yung ganun.

97 A: Tapos na-influence na rin ng friends.

98 M: Oo.

99 O: In what way do you gain satisfaction in playing online games?’

Arog kaiyan.

102 Sana ma-gets nindo to *laughs*

103 O: Do you think playing online games is beneficial or detrimental to you? Why?

104 M: Hmm…

Pwede man kaya

109 tinurugan ko nalang. Yan, detrimental siya pero igwasiya good effects pero dae man yan

110 ang purpose niya. Ang purpose niya man is to relax.

111 O: In what way does online gaming affect you physically?

112 M: Physically. Ahh yun dati kasi ano nag-sosoccer ako tapos okay pa naman yung ano ko

113 parang physical. Wala naman sakit ganon. Kaso dahil sige lang akong kawat, parang
51

115 ganun. Napapagal tulos.

118 sosoccer.”?

119 M: Iyo, naglalaog yan. Like, ta varsity ako dati, nakakahiling akong mga My Day kang

120 ano,

121 A: Puwedeng paturo po kasi futsal kami *laughs* joke lang.

122 M: May My Day kang mga ka-team ko tas sabi ko, “Ay, yaon kuta ko duman” *laughs*

123 A: Aww. So like na-rereminisce mo.

124 M: Oo.

Itong nasa varsity na very active pero ngunyan

127 nagluluya-luya na.

128 M: Oo.

129 A: Ok, pero ano dae garo… Still, love mo pa man ang soccer?

130 M: Iyo.

131 A: Ano ang mas matimbang, online games or soccer?

132 M: Soccer ta si barkada ko

133 A: Ahh yaun duman. So, peer influence again.

134 M: Peer influence.

135 A: Ok.

136 O: How does it affect you emotionally?

52

137 M: Ah bawal magmuda ano? *laughs*

138 A: Ahh sige lang po. We are giving you the freedom of speech.

139 M: *laughs* Sure, sure. Thank you.

141 masisi, p*tang ina, p*tang ina. Garo ma-iirritate kang mayong rason. Like, napapagal

143 dae to hassle masyado. Ginibo mo na kuta. Tas ika pa na. Na-sostock man lang yan,

144 nagiging ano masabi ka ahh stress ganun. Tapos mafefeel tas hashtag depressed.*laughs*

145 A: Hashtag depressed.

146 O: How about mentally po?

149 A: Sana all. Photographic memory yiee.

150 M: Kaso kadto nag-eeffort man ako ngunyan mayo na. Nagbababa man siya arog kaiyan.

152 Tapos mentally man, tong pag sige kang kawat, na-iisolate mo sadiri mo sa mundo.

153 Nagigi kang garo, pirmi ka nang may anxiety or whatever. Garo kawat kang 2 weeks

Ganun, nakakaapekto man siya.

53

160 Nakakaapekto man ganun.

163 isa pa niyan na kung naadik kang masyado, tapos, first day of class, ano parang di mo

164 tuloy kakausapin ang ibang kaklase kasi, “Ay baka di ako ma-gets nito”, kasi lahat ng

165 iniisip mo, ang iniisip lang laro. Parang puwede namang iba ang sabihin mo eh like, “Hi”

Yun yung

167 problema na hindi ako nag-open. Nung umpisa lang pero nung nagka-groupings na

168 whatever, okay naman socially. Kaso yan, another thing is pag naglalaro ako, sa

169 messenger, ‘di ako namamansin.

170 A: *Coughs* excuse me.

172 M: Meron.

176 dispute sa real life. Sabi niya, “i-settle natin dun sa best of ten”. Tas naglagay pa siyang

177 pera. Tas yan sabi ko, “wag mo yang gawin” tas inapod niya pa akong, “Ahh weaksh*t ka

178 man” arog kayan.

179 sinda dahil duman.

180 A: Ahh so ika na-witness mo.

181 M: like what the f*ck? Sabi ko *laughs*

182 O: After playing online games, how do you feel?

54

184 saaga”. Garo siya addiction talaga.

185 O: What are your realizations in engaging in the trend of playing online games?

I mean, may argument na puwede mong pagkakitaan kaso ano pag

188 naglaos na yan, sain ka mabagsak? Kaya ano binabalanse ko na ta syempre dapat to have-

189 to enjoy leisure, entertainment, dapat ano ma-settle mo muna sadiri mo, nagibo mo na

190 gabos na project or ano.

Garo man ang bata

192 *laughs*

193 A: Ay wow yiee.

194 muna ta amay pa, dugay pa kita ta estudyante pa man.

195 M: When you’re done you can play all you want.

196 A: Yes, yes.

197 O: What advise can you give to other students who find playing online games as

198 detrimental?

204 arog kaiyan maghanap ning someone na willing to listen.

55

206 ngani kang DOH na hilang yan. Yuhn man lang.

207 O: Why did you choose playing online games as a means of rest and recreation ather than

208 other means of unwinding?

211 M: Oo. Minsan ngani sinasabi ko, “ayy baduyon man yan” kan aki pa ako. Ngunyan sige

212 nalang kong kawat. *laughs*

213 A: Pero ngunyan naglalaro pa rin kayo ng papa mo?

214 M: Ahh dae na ta ano to banggi na pirmi. Turog na,

215 A: Pero dati oo?

216 M: Dati oo.

What if po may time na

222 M: Oo. Inaalok ko yun. Kaso busy sa trabaho.

223 A: Pag naglalaro po si papa mo ano yung genre?

224 M: Ahh barilan.

225 A: tulad nung sayo?

226 M: Iba rin.

227 A: Ok. We’re done with the questions, so for now what advice, suggestion or question

228 can you give to us regarding our study?

56

229 M: Dun sa una niyong title, Impacts talaga?

230 A: Oo.

231 M: Effects.

236 Ateneo de Naga University Senior High School students. 7 words agad. Eto sabi niya

239 nagtanong, one of our panelists.

240 M: Sinong panelist? Sir Jam?

241 A: Yeah Sir Jam, Ma’am Joms. Dalawa lang sa amin.

242 M: Sa RRL niyo, okay naman?

243 A: Oo.

So

247 may other questions ka pa?

248 M: Isip pa… Ma na okay na.

249 A: Thank you so much po sa interview.

250 M: No problem.

251 A: Thank you so much. Ta busy busy ang grade 12 ngunyan tas naisingit pa. Thank you.
