bring their knowledge and experience to the course. Interior design is an exhilarating creative

Portfolios and interviews

Your portfolio should be selective, but have enough work to show a range of your interests and

finished work.

If you cannot bring certain pieces of your work to your portfolio interview, please take photographs
and include them.

Physical portfolio
If you are coming in person to your interview we strongly suggest bringing a physical portfolio of
work.

Things to bring:

Sketchbooks– we love to see your sketchbooks with ideas and notes, even if they are
messy.
Examples of the development of a project from start to finish and the final outcome.
Some work that you are really proud of and want to talk about.
Some work that shows you experimenting with different processes.

Digital Portfolio
If you are submitting an online application, please follow these guidelines.

Things to include:

Scans or photographs demonstrating items from the list above.

Storyboarding for motion-based work.
Also include scans of sketchbook pages showing development.
Be sure to check the resolution and overall quality of your image to ensure submissions are
not pixelated.

Course overview

Our Interior Design (including foundation year) BA (Hons) involves an exciting range of projects in
the cultural, social and commercial fields that will prepare you for a successful career in interior
design.

The foundation year will prepare you for academic study by equipping you with skills such as
essay writing, reading, research and critical analysis. You’ll also be introduced to working in
studios and workshops, while completing intensive short-term projects. These will be followed by
interpretive and longer projects, which aim to give you a sense of direction and a personal
perspective on interior design, as well as on the broader art and design field.

You’ll share your foundation year with students from our other foundation year courses, allowing
you to gain new perspectives on and ideas for your own work. There will be opportunities to view
work from other students and present your own finished and work-in-progress projects. This year
will be excellent preparation for the end-of-year exhibition, where you’ll present your project to your
peers, tutors and the general public.

On completion of the foundation year you’ll begin more focused study of interior design, sharing
the classroom with students who have started on the traditional three-year course. You’ll study the
same course content and have the same choice of modules as those students. You can learn
more about the subsequent three years of study by visiting the Interior Design BA (Hons) course
page.

If towards the end of your foundation year you decide that you’d like to specialise in a different
subject area there will be flexibility to do so.

What is a degree with a foundation year at the School of Art,

Architecture and Design?
This is a four-year degree course with a built-in foundation year (Year 0). A foundation year in our
School of Art, Architecture and Design is the starting point for many of our art, architecture and
design students and acts as an introduction to the wide range of creative practices explored within
the University. You may join us with a clear idea of the subject you intend to study or you may use
it as an opportunity to explore a number of different directions or experiment with your creativity. A
foundation year degree is also a great choice if you don't meet the necessary entry requirements
for the standard undergraduate degree. You'll graduate with a full undergraduate degree with the
same title and award as those who studied the three-year course.

Additional costs
Please note, in addition to the tuition fee there may be additional costs for things like equipment,

Interior designing is an exhilarating practice responding to the rapid pace of the interiors industry. It

as workspaces, luxury, hotels, retail, museums, exhibitions, and health and educational spaces.
This Interior Design BA will introduce you to the latest research as well as industry professionals

Your first year – through an active and holistic learning and teaching programme – is designed to
develop your thinking, key skills and understanding of the industry and related practice, allowing
you to produce a portfolio and discover your career aspirations through explorative approaches.
You’ll explore sketching, drawing, sketch-modelling and the production of scaled accurate models
through workshop practice and orthographic techniques, with digital software also used to
strengthen your ideas and skills. This will guide you into your second year where we ask you to
choose a studio in which to cultivate your design philosophy, sector specialisms and professional
skills. The course also offers an opportunity to work within the industry and gain real life work
experience with an interior design company, which is assessed as part of your degree. We then
build on this in the third year and advance your individuality and expertise through both studio
specialisms and a mentoring scheme leading you towards successful employment.

Our studios are run by practitioners and experts in their field who develop a series of year-long
projects covering contemporary and relevant design issues and topics. We work with well-known
businesses, associations, and museums and galleries running live projects. This gives you the
opportunity to discuss and exhibit your projects, which in turn helps you to develop a range of

We're also in the top 35 unis in the UK for architecture according to the Guardian university league
tables 2022.

You can find out more about what to expect on the course in this video presentation from our Head
of Interiors.

Entry requirements
In addition to the University’s standard entry requirements, you will normally be expected to obtain:

a minimum grade BBC in three A levels from relevant subject areas such as the arts,
humanities and social sciences (or a minimum of 112 UCAS points from an equivalent Level
3 qualification in relevant art and design subjects)
a portfolio review
English language GCSE at grade C/grade 4 or above
We encourage applications from international/EU students with equivalent qualifications. We also
accept mature students with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Suitable applicants living in the UK will be invited to a portfolio interview. Applicants living outside
the UK will be required to submit a portfolio of work via email.

If you don't have traditional qualifications or can't meet the entry requirements for this
undergraduate degree, you may still be able to gain entry by completing our Interior Design (with
Preparatory Semester) BA Hons or our Interior Design (including foundation year) BA (Hons).

Portfolios and interviews

Your portfolio should be selected but have enough work to show the range of your interests and
talents. We are interested in seeing how you develop a project from beginning to end, not only
finished work.

Interior designers make models as well as flatwork, so 3D work may be relevant as well as 2D.

If you cannot bring it to portfolio interview, take photographs and include them.

We always want to see traditional drawing whether observational, life or concept generating, so
please include this, even if you have good CAD skills already.

Finally, be ready to talk about your work and how you see your future as an interior designer.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used throughout the course. These range from formative,
summative, diagnostic, peer and self-assessment methods, through to studio based work,
workshops, and CAD and digital projects and exercises. Feedback is given throughout the course.

Modular structure

Course overview

The foundation year is an intensive year that will help you progress to the bachelor’s part of our
Interior Design and Decoration (including foundation year) BA (Hons) degree. In the subsequent
three years of your course you’ll focus more on the discipline of interior design and decoration,
during which you’ll get to explore projects spanning private, commercial and community interiors.

The foundation year will help you make sure that you choose the right specialism and prepare you
for study at undergraduate level. It will help you to build a portfolio of work, as well as develop
knowledge and skills related to a range of specialist undergraduate degree programmes in our
School of Art, Architecture and Design.

You’ll share the foundation year with others studying a degree with a foundation year in the
School. The shared curriculum will introduce you to techniques used by architects, artists and
interior designers through a variety of intensive studio projects – from 2D and 3D composition
drawing to workshop techniques.

After the foundation year you’ll join students on our Interior Design and Decoration BA (Hons) and
you’ll study the same content and have the same choice of modules as them. On graduation you’ll
also gain the same award and title.

If practising different areas of art and design sparks your interest in a specialism that is not interior
design and decoration, there will be flexibility to allow you to change your specialism.

How much will my course cost if I start in
September 2022 or January 2023?
Tuition fees for Home students are regulated by the
UK government. For 2022-23 these will be £9,250.
Fees for international students (including students
from the EU) are published on our online course
pages when they’re available. Fees are reviewed
annually and are likely to change to take into
account inlationary increases. You can also ind the

What funding is available?

If you’re a UK student, you may be able to borrow
money to help cover your fees and get help with
living costs. If you’re eligible for a tuition fee loan,
you usually don’t need to pay back your loan until
you have completed your course and are earning
£27,295 or more per year. There are also other
sources of funding to help you pay your living costs
(these are usually means-tested). For the latest
information on tuition fee loans and maintenance
