Boarding Assistants

St John’s Beaumont is a Roman Catholic (Jesuit) Day and Boarding Preparatory School
for boys aged from 3 to 13. Set in a rural location adjacent to Windsor Great Park, St
John’s is believed to be the oldest purpose-built preparatory school in the Country,
founded in 1888 and combining the rich tradition of Jesuit education with the very
best that modern teaching techniques and technology can offer.

St John’s are looking for four people to work 4pm – 9pm 5 days a week and three
people to work weekends from 7am to 9pm on a rota basis, working an average of 4
weekends over 6 weekends.

AIM OF POST: To ensure that efficient routines are maintained in the house
as directed by the Head of Boarding, Deputy Head of
Boarding and Dormitory Master/Mistress whilst ensuring the
safety, good discipline and pastoral wellbeing of all boys in
the boarding house.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

The role of Boarding Assistant is to support the Dormitory Master/Mistress in their


day to day operations with particular focus on the supervision of students.

Boarding duties and responsibilities:

 Assist with the morning routine including supervising wake up, showers,
getting ready for the school day and breakfast.
 Assist with the evening routine including supervising planned activities,
dinner time, showers and bed time.
 Supervise study periods encouraging quiet, appropriate behaviour and
providing assistance where needed.
 Supervise the boys free time.
 Supervise and plan weekend activities to ensure the enjoyment and safety
of all boys.
 Oversee the daily laundry routine.
 Ensure that student’s clothes and personal belongings are properly named,
in good repair, used and worn appropriately and stored securely and tidily;
to ensure that students treat the belongings of others, and the fabric and
furnishings of the boarding house, with respect.
 Ensure that boys keep their cubicles clean and tidy.
 Assist with the arrival and departure of boarders at the start and end of
term, guest room and half terms.
 Under the guidance of the Dormitory Master/Mistress, ensure that risk
assessments for boarding activities outside of the school premises are
understood and followed.
 Promote a climate where boarding school staff and students share mutual
respect, care trust and concern.
 Promote a sense of community.
 Ensure that individual circumstances, needs, strengths and weaknesses of
each student are communicated to the Head of Boarding /Deputy Head of
Boarding as observed, so that individual opportunities, talents and
potential are developed and maximised.
 Help and guide the boys to share a collective responsibility, to be aware of
the difficulties or problems of others, and to offer such support and help
for each other as appropriate
 To work collectively with the Boarding Team and implement the decisions
made.
 To support the School’s disciplinary policy by encouragement and reward
and through a clearly understood and fair system of sanctions; foster an
acceptance of the code of conduct of the house and School; to inform the
Head of Boarding in any cases of bullying and general misconduct.
 Set a good example and demonstrate a clear expectation of student
behaviour.
 Refer serious discipline problems to the Head of Boarding or Heads of
School as appropriate.
 Oversee the boarding council, so that they can play their part in carrying
out effectively the tasks assigned to them.
 Ensure that you are familiar with the School’s policies and procedures,
particularly for child protection and safeguarding, countering bullying,
substance misuse, health and safety including Covid-19, and are aware of
the appropriate response in these areas.
 Ensure boarding house processes are followed particularly with regards
health and safety, safeguarding and Covid-19.
 Attend night prayer when on duty or on the premises.
 Attend the boarding community Sunday Mass unless absence agreed with
Head of Boarding.
 To take part in performance management or staff review arrangements
made by the School on an annual basis.
 To perform other key tasks as the Head of boarding or Headmaster may
reasonably assign.
 Attend whole school meetings, boarding meetings, relevant staff training
sessions and any related activities.
 Be available to provide cover in Boarding at short notice if there is staff
sickness to ensure pupil to staff ratios are maintained. This may also
include cover during the week.
 Perform other tasks at the discretion of the Head of Boarding/Dormitory
Master or Mistress as circumstances arise.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience

• Educated to Degree Level or equivalent


• A keen interest in pastoral care, teaching, boarding or education
• Excellent communication skills
• Good team player that can also work independently
• First Aid and/or Lifeguarding qualification desirable
• Stamina, good sense of humour and resilient
• An understanding of Health and Safety and Safeguarding
• The ability to follow processes and procedures
• The ability to be flexible and responsible
• The ability to multi-task
• Experience in the care of children or young people
• Sensitivity to and interest in child welfare
• Willingness to undertake post related training
