BASKETBALL

BASIC RULES OF BASKETBALL

1. How to Win
-In order to win, a team must score more points than their opponent within the established
timeframe.

2. Points
-Points are commonly scored in increments of 1,2,3.

3. Number of Players
-A team is required to have five players on the court at all times making ten players
between the two teams.

4. Player Substitution
-Player substitutions can only occur in dead ball situations after whistle is blown

5 .Timeouts
-In basketball, each team has a predetermined number of timeouts that they can use over
the course of a game, which varies based on the league.

6. Moving the Ball/Traveling

-Players can only move the ball by passing or dribbling
-A travel results in a turnover

7. Dribbling/Double Dribble
-This means that once a player stops dribbling and gathers the ball, they may not start
dribbling again until they pass or shoot

8. Out of Bounds
-If a player or the ball goes out of bounds, the ball will be given to the opposite team of
whoever touched it last.

9. Fouls
-If any player on either side of the ball uses physical contact to stop an opposing player, they
will be called for a foul.

10.Violations
-Similar to fouls, violations occur when players commit rule violations that do not involve
contact with other players.
PLAYER POSITIONS

1.POINTS GUARD
-The point guard runs the offense and usually is the team’s best dribbler and passer. The
point guard defends the opponent’s point guard and tries to steal the ball.
2. SHOOTING GUARD
-The shooting guard is usually the team’s best shooter. The shooting guard can make shots
from long distance and also is a good dribbler.
3. SMALL FORWARD
-The small forward plays against small and large players. They roam all over on the court.
Small forwards can score from long shots and close ones.
4. POWER FORWARD
-The power forward does many of the things a center does, playing near the basket while
rebounding and defending taller players. But power forwards also take longer shots than
centers.
5.CENTER
-The center is the tallest player on each team, playing near the basket. On offense, the
center tries to score on close shots and rebound. But on defense, the center tries to block
opponents’ shots and rebound their misses.

COURT DIMENSION

-The court is a flat, hard surface free from obstructions, 28m long and 15 wide, measured
from the inner edge of the boundary line. The backcourt is the team's own basket, inbounds
part of the backboard and the part of the playing court limited by their own endline, sidelines
and centre line
GOALS

-The basketball goal (also known as a ring or hoop) is typically 18 inches (45.72cm) in diameter
and must be positioned 3.05m from the floor. Nets are typically white and suspended from the
ring. They should be no shorter than 45cm.
