Formalist Criticism
is defined as a literary criticism approach
which provides readers with a way to
understand and enjoy a work for its own
inherent value as a piece of literary art. It
focuses only on the text; all other
considerations are irrelevant.

Moral Criticism
Judges the value of the literature based on its moral
lessons or ethical teachings. Its concern is not only to
discover the definition whether literary works are
both true and significant.

Historical Criticism
Historical criticism, literary criticism in the light of
historical evidence or based on the context in which a
work was written, including facts about the author’s

centers the analysis of opposing classes, namely;
bourgeoisie and proletariat.

Reflection

When I was little, whenever I heard the word

“criticize”, I always thought that it is a bad thing because of
the negative conception about it. As I grew older, I’ve
realized criticism is not a bad thing if used in the right way
and with a correct purpose. Criticism helps artist and
writers on their work through giving suggestions on what to
improve on their art. It’s fascinating to know that there are
many types of approach in criticism, specifically literary
criticism. Each approach is unique with different
characteristics. Learning that some of my favorite books
belong to some of these makes me giddy. Well, all I can
say is acquiring new knowledge is definitely fun.
