Music has been an extremely useful tool for historians and current citizens to define and express
themselves, their culture, and so on. Historians composed music about the current state of their society
in each era because music helped in reflecting on current societal issues and was used as a tool for social
change and community building all over the world.

Atonality- describes music that does not use a tonal center or key. It is an absence of tonality in a
piece.

Bitonality- the use of only two different keys at the same time.

Polytonality- the musical use of more than one key simultaneously.

Polychord- having many keys strings—used of a musical instrument.

Polymeter- where two sequences are played using different meters, but with the same tempo.

Polyrhythm- the simultaneous combination of contrasting rhythms in music.
