But many preachers and teachers give us only a
change wrought on our own nature, and they call that
being born again; but that could not be, for that whic~

Christ, who has fallen away and been lost since the
beginning 6f Christianity, and none ever will or can.
Just look at this word of our blessed Lord's-" And
as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wiLlerness: even.
80 must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever
believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal
life. For God so loved the world, that He gave His
only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him
should not perish, but have everlasting life." Sit down
before such a precious utterance of the true and faithful
Witness, and say, " 0 my soul, look at that, how true
it is, that on the authority of my Redeemer thou hast
everlasting life." What grace there is in this, that
eternal life is the gift of God through J esns Christ our
Lord! How different from the legal doctrine man
would teach me: That on believing in Christ I have
life, and it will be made eternal or not, just as I behave
myself! Surely this is not like" the God of all grace,"
who gave me His only begotten Son to die for me and
rise again. This is not grace at all; it is lnerely'
tantalising me with an uncertain hope-suspending .
my salvation on my good behaviour, and not on the
blood-shedding of Jesus. If I were saved thus I
would not be able to join the new song in glory, and
sing, as they all do there, "Worthy is the Lamb that
was slain," for I would bring in the discordant note,
and say, " Worthy is the Lamb that was slain and my .
good be~aviour." Your sensitive hearts 'would feel
horrified at such a thought; but that is what the
doctrine would lead to if logically carried out. Bu~

on His part; that is, I-Ie does nut change His mind
and recall Ilis gifts, and fall froin IIis pll.rpOSe of grace.
What you should do is to continue to increase in divine
knowledge of God's grace and His testimony to His Son.
"Grow in grace, and in the kno'\vledge of our Lord
and Saviour J esusChrist." There are vast fields of
Scripture truth you have never explored, and of ,vhich
you have no conception. Get up your constitution
and your soul's strength by living by the faith of the
Son of God, and avoid all controversy with anyone.
It is the God-'loard· side of Christianity you need to
know-the positive sic1e of your blessing in Christ, as
says Eph. i.: U Blessed be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all
spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
according as He hath chosen us 'in Ilint before the
foundation of the world, that we should be holy and
without blame before Him in love, &c.; wherein He
hath Inade us accepted in the Belovad." Let Him
occupy your whole thoughts. See how frequently" in
Christ," "in Ilirn," occur in Ephesians. "Your life
is hid with Christ in God." Do not think of yourselves
at all, but get absorbed with Christ and let your-whole
aim be that I rnay know Him, and let your affections
centre in Him as your only object; be occupied
supremely 1vith Him, and you will be filled with His

SE11INAL SENTENCES.
I.-ON F AlTH.
I.-The moment a saint a,cts upon any object seen
he ceases to act as a Christian.
2. To faith that which is unseen becomes as present
and as real as though present to sight (Reb. xi. 1), yea,
much more so because there is deception in seen things;
but there is no deception in things cOilllllunicated by
the Spirit to the heart.
3. There are two things which faith recognises;
First, the blood of atonement, by which sin was put
away; and secondly, a power of life by which we walk
(not merely as His people but), with God. The result
will be that the power of death is entirely gone. We
are identified with a living Christ, as we are saved by
the death of Christ.
4. Faith condemns the world (Reb. xi. 7). It is
not merely belief in a sacrifice that saves, like Abel's,
and power for walk with God, like Enoch~s, but it was
what God has said about the judgruent of the world.
The thing that is coming upon this ~Norld is judgn1ent.
5. As sure as Christ rose from the dead, lIe is the
'1)1an God has ordained to judge the \vorld;' and so
surely is there no condemnation for us who believe in
Him .. That by which I kno\v. there will be a judgment
is that by which I know there vvill be none for 1ne.
How do I know there will be a judgment? Because
God has raised Christ fraln the dead. vVhat more has
God told me of his resurrection? That my sins are
all put away by the s~crifice of Himself.
6. There is the active manifestation of the power
of faith. Abr~ham, when called of God to leave all and

TaE Spirit of God, as dwelling in us, l~ay be considerecl
in bvo aspects: for He unites UB to the L::>l'd Jesus,
so that Ilis presence is intimately connected with life,
that life which is in Jesus. (John xiv. 19, 90; Gal. il.
:20). "He that is joined unto the Lord is one Spirit;"
and further, His presence is that of God in. the soul.
The Scripture, spe3..king of Him in the first of these
cha.racters (which is sometimes linked to the second),
says (Rom. viii .. 2, a, 10), that the law of the Spirit of
life in Chris~ Jesus frees us from the law of sin; so that
the Spirit is life because of righteousness. It is how-
ever, also said (vel'. 9), " If so be that the Spirit of God
dwell in you; " and then His indwelling and action are.
blended, since (inasmuch as both are manifested by the
fornlation of the character of Christ in the sonI) "the
Spirit of God" becomes "the Spirit of Christ."
The" Christ in you" of verse 10 expresses the idecIJ
more clearly, especially as the apostle adds, " if Christ.
be in you the Spirit is life." But in verse 16 the Holy
Ghost is carefully distinguished from the Christian, for

and 27 the two characters of the presence of the Spirit

sprinkled; the SPIRIT is gi ven. The reason is we u,l'e
occupied with ourselves ana the wOTk of the Spirit in
us, rather than with Christ alone. This is the
weakness in the 'wiele-spread holiness ,,"ark so lUuch of
which is superficial. Let us look nl0re into that un-
veiled face from which streanlS the light of the kno\v-
ledge of the glory of God. (:3 Cor. iii., iv.) All else
will pale, and fade if -r;ve \vill but linger here.
A word here. The Spirit never occupies Iue 'with
His work in 111e. And if I am thus occupied I am out of
the mindof the Spirit. The v/ord is, "IIe sha.ll not speak
of Hinlself," nor yet concerning Hiu1self. "He shall

Inside, then, during the night of darkness, by the
light of the seven lamps which shone on the golJ.en
table with the twelve loaves arranged in order upon it
there twas foreshadowed the future; but tbat could be
seeD, and was seen, july by the priests, who passed be-
hind the curtain which screened the outer challlber from
the eyes of those in the ~ourt of the tabernacle. And
now we can undelstand the :fitness of introducing the
directions about the loaves of shewbread in the book
of Leviticus, and especially in this part of it. For,
coming as they do, just after the outline of God's ways
in grace with the people. has been traced out in the
ol'der of their different great feasts throughout the
. year, the Lord, after remin ding us by the fehst of
'fabernacles of IRrael's final blessing, would here tell
. us 'of the kingdom coming in power, which fIe has not
forgotten, neither will He for ev~r be wroth with the
tribes of His inheritance (T8ai. lxiii. 17). But Israel's
acceptance, as the frankincense on the loaves portrays,
will only be by virtue of the s\veet savour of the merits
of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Such, then, is some of the instruction conveyed by
tbi& passage in the book~ instruction, too, especially
suited for the present tilue, that ·we should not forge,t
to give Israel their proper place- in connection with
the coming day of blessing for earth; for if we 'were
to interpret all the blessings which are predicted by the
prophets, as if they concerned the Church of God, and'
not the earthly people Israel, vre should fail to give
them their proper place, in the declared coullRels of
God. But how different the scene inside the sanctuary
from that 'which could, and we here read did, go on
in the camp. All calm and silent within, the testi-
lllony to the coming kingdom in power, and Israel's.'

connection with it being steadily kept in view) God's
purpose was thus seen to be unchanged and irrevocable;
for the nation's future is inseparably bound up with
that which is due to the obedient man, the Son of God's
love. In the ca,mp, on the contrary, there \vas strife,
and one was found, then but one (though by and by it
will be the many, the mass) who, of Israelitish extraction
on his rnother's side, had the hardihood to blaspheme'
the name of the Lord. An apostate in heart and in
act, he turned his back on Jehovah, and blas1}hemed
Him who was Israel's Creator and God. This man
was the fruit of an alliance with the world, for his
mother's nan18 was Shelomitb, the daughter of Dibri,
of the tribe of Dan, but his father was an Egyptian.
He has passed a\vay from earth, his name unknown to
us, though his crillle has never been allowed to sink into·
oblivion, a warning, and surely a foreshadowing, too,
of that which will characterise the mass of the Jews
when antichrist vv~ill be their ki.ng and apostacy will
be their crowning sin. .
Charged with the guilt of cursing the name of
Jehovah, he was brought to 1'10888, and put in ward,
till the mind of the Lord should be shown them. For
that they· did not wait long. Jehova~ revealed it to
Moses, and it was accurately carried out. For the
apostate there was no mercy "Bring forth him that hath
cUl"-3ed," 'Vvas the word ,( without the co,mp, and let all
that heard him, lay their hands upon his bead, and let
aU the congregation stone him (xxiv. 13-14). And

LEVITICUS XXV.
THE Lord had spoken to 110se8 out of the Tabernacle
of the congreg.1tion in chapter i. He here (chap. xxv.)
a.ddresses His servant in 1vlouut Sinai, and gives hitn a
new revelation, comprised in this and the following
.chapter, which has special reference to the land and to
Israel's restoration to it in the future. For whatever
any individual amongst them might do to draw down

to give the land to the seed of J acob ~GE;ll. xxviii. 13)r
and He \vould assuredly fulfil HlS word. Yet the land,
though given them to possess, was never absolutely
theirs. It was God's (xxv. 23). By-and-bye, . therefore,
they shall re..inherit it; none call override Jehovah's
claim to it. But if His, ,He had the right of prescrib-
ing certain conditions ccJnnected with the people's
tenure and the enjoyment of it. Of such we now read .. -
T he first of these has reference to the Sabbatical
year (xxv. 2), and the second tv the institution of the
Jubilee (8-55). As on the seventh day they were to
rest from aU their work, so in the seventh year the
land ,vas to have rest from cultivation by the husband-
luau, the ternl used of the one is that used of the other.

who has glorified God on the earth, and who has been
glorified by God, and with God in the highest heavens.
Where there is faith in a risen and glorified Christ
there will be the conscious enjoyment in Him of
divine life, filial relationship, and spiritual liberty.
" \Vhere the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty," and
He is with all who believe the' gospel of the glory of
Christ. The Spirit of God is with those "who accept
the ministration of life and righteousness in Christ,
from the glory of God, and He gives them to know
Him, and what God has given us in Him. Trace the
patb of the Son of God, from His coming in flesh to
His ascension into the glory of God, and think of Him
as the humbled, victorious, and exalted man. " That
holy thing w bieh shall be born of thee shall be called
the Son of God." "The Word was' made flesh, and
dwelt among us, and we behelc1 his glory, the glory as
of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and
truth." The only begotten Son who is in the bosom
of the Father He hath declared Him. God has been
revealed on earth as a personal God (for" God was in
Christ") and in His relationship as a Father in the
person of the Son of 1\lan born of the Virgin. He
was born holy-" that holy thing that shall be born
of thee." lIe lived a life of obedience, dependence
and holiness, and as God's Pious One, God the Father
could claim Him at His baptism, as His by the voice

alone One to open His mouth, to be listened to, and as they failed to

learnt, till the Lord returns (1 Tim. ·vi. 16), and reV\rards
are only given when the Lord has received the kingdom
(Luke xix., 11-17). The Lord's return to reign en.
courages saints when suffering from injustice (Jer. v. 7).
It encourages them to be meek now (Phil. iv. 8). Paul
looked forward then to rejoin his converts (1 Thess. ii.
18-19;. It should bear on our walk (1 Thess. iii. 13 ,.
v. 6-10; Tit. ii. 13; 1 J o. iii. 3); and act on the saint
in service (1 Tim. vi. 13-16; 2 'I1im. iv. 1-3).
The coming for the saints has also its ,practical side..
It differs from prophecy, as Peter shows" (2 Pet. i. 19).
It warns against saying-" My Lord delayeth his
coming" (Matt. xxiv.45 to end) ; and of profession with-
out.reality (Matt. xxv. 1-13), The blessedness, too, of
being found watching and working, Luke xii. 37-4:4
sets forth. How much is lost by not discerning the
difference between the rapture of the saints and the
Lord's return to reign!
Such, then. IS the testlillonyof Scripture on the main
points of the hope of the Lor d's coming, and as it is
in contrast and antagonism with the teaching of the
pamphlet, there is no need of going into a formal e~~
amination of it in detail. A fe\v,drops of bad water is
sufficient for the purpose of testing it, so a few thoughts
of an unscriptural pamphlet.

over all blessed for ever. JJAs the Son of 1}lau, there-
fore, He may be looked at in these three aspects. He
is the anointed mau,-the undefiled hUDlan teluple
raised at the beginning by the lioly Ghost, o.ud then
filled by Him (Luke i. 35, iv. 1). He is the hZf.,Jnbled
man, who travelled in sorrow here, dowu to the death
of the cross (Phil. ii.). He is the exalted llian, cro\vned
now with glory and honour, and by and bye to have all
dominion (Reb. ii.).
As the Son of :r.lan, He deals with man; and in that
action, I believe, our Evangelist specially presents Him
to us. In this Gospel He converces \vith the human
family; He knows man as a creature of certain faculties
• Together with this restoration of man, Jesu~ brings with Him
(blessed mystery 1) all the value of His peculiar persoll as U Son of

and passions, being I-limself, all the while, the anointed
mau, the heavenly nlan, who Cl1me to exhibit man ac-
cording to the mind of heaven, standing for the blessed
God in the midst of the human family, who had deeply
revolted froln IIiln. He was the only fair untainted
fruit of the hunlan soil; and thus growing up in the
Inidst, 1-1e exposes all beside.
This was His purpose, and that He might do this
perfectly, and exhibit in Himself man according to
God, and in all beside, Ulan departed into evil, He is
eminently in this Gospel the social one. He is most
generally seen here in hUllln.n intercourse and in places
of resort, carrying thus the anointed man everywhere,
to be found and read of all. And sweet indeed would
it be, if the saints reac1 the holy lesson better. ,In
walking before the world, their path would be the
purer, in walking together it would be more refined
and elevated. Not that they would put on the mode
and sanctioned order of the ",~orla. but they would
gracefully wear" the things that are lovely and of
good report." And that \vould be the holy adorning
of their doctrine. It \voulc1 be the saint in the power
of that love ·which behaveth itself not unseemly, but
which exhibits the virtue and the praise that suits
anointed men after the pattern of Jesus.
As such pattern we have I-lim here in St. Luke.
And there is beautiful order in the Gospels as they thus
lie before us. The Lord had to enter the scene as to
Israel, having a question with the people of His ancient
election in the earth; but being I'einscd by them; he
takes His own most proper and undistracted paths,
which in the Gospels, one after another, are still in
order, each rising above the preceding one, and pro-
perly follo\ving it. For having tried the question with

who was not its original owner. Where such was the·
case, whilst the occupier CQuld vow it for the term ofms
occupancy,the field at the Jubilee reverted to its original'
possessor. The justice of this regulation is evident.
So whilst providing for the outflow of a luau's heart
in thankfulness to Him, God watched over the rights
of His poor ones, and luaintained likewise His own.
For we read that no firstling, on which the Lord as
snch had a claim, could be the subject of such a vow,
any mOi:'e than the tithe of the herd or of the flock,
which He had already bestowed on the Levites (26-32).
The tithes of the land, however, could be redeemed,
but only on p~yment of one-fifth .more than their
value (30-31). Here this book ends, which details
8ta~utes andjudgments, and laws which the Lord made
between Himself and the .children of Israel in Mount
Sinai by the hand of Moses· (xxvi. 46); as well as
conlmandments which the Lord commanded Moses for
the children of Israel in that same Mount (xxvii. 34).
In the opening paper on this book (vol. iii., p. 134),
we pointed out the four great divisions into which
Leviticus divides itself, i.-x.; ri.-xvi.; xvii.-xxiii.;
xxiv.-xxvii. We would now in conclusion briefly trace
out the moral order in which the subjects it contains
are brought out by the Spirit of God. We have al- ·
ready referred to part of it (vol. iv., pp. 112, 212 ; vol.
V., p. 140); we would now trace it o~t as a whole.
Vievring the book in this light it divides itself into two'
great parts-i.-xvi.; xvll.-xxvii. In the first we have
set .forth God's provision in grace for souls, truth
which c·oncerns saints. In the second we see traced
out His desires for, and His ways with, His earthly
people Israel, from the Exodus to the Millennium.'
