Colour is the driving force when it comes to
drapes for VAYA Home. The retail store which
was started four years ago has launched a
collection where red, teal and greens dominate
the palette with curling, curving motifs.
Combining both machine­cut and hand
embroidery, they give importance to the
artisans’ work. Expanding on this, Abhay
Jaipuria, co­founder, VAYA Home, says, “When
the cloth passes through the machine, gaps are
made so that artists can embroider. Artists from
West Bengal hand embroider on the material.
Every cloth is made in­house; from spinning to
dyeing, everything is taken care of.” The
collection features heavy embroidery and
jacquard work. Highlighting the Gulmohar
collection, he says the designs are inspired by
North Indian history such as the Mughal period.
In this particular collection, there is heavy
usage of the florals and depictions of trees
which is inspired by the Shalimar Gardens in
New Delhi, while the Lawrence collection is
influenced by the English era featuring a variety
of birds. When speaking about what consumers
like, Abhay says plains, such as plain linen and
plain cotton for drapery do really well in the
market across India. The collection is available
at retail stores across the country and the price
can go up to ₹7,000.

Orange Tree x Doodlage
In a bid, to promote sustainable and mindful shopping,
Orange Tree’s collaboration with the eco­conscious fashion
brand Doodlage has brought out the Break the Code­Live the
Waste, lighting range. In a first for Doodlage, they have come
out with a range comprising 13 lamps. Doodlage is famous for
their recycled clothes; the lamps too are made from fashion
waste. Sourcing discarded and export wastes from Delhi,
Jaipur and Chandigarh, the cloth is then put together to make
patterns for the lamps. “We want people to go beyond the
product. Check the tag, and see where the product was
sourced,” says Nikita Bansal, head, product and retail,
Orange Tree. “There has been an increase in people picking
up natural fibre lamps,” she adds. The collection is available
online, and at the Orange Tree store in Hyderabad. The price
range is ₹5,000 ­ ₹11,000.
