Enola Holmes, starring Millie Bobby Brown (Enola) and Henry Cavill (Sherlock), is a 2020 American

mystery film based on the first book in the series “The Enola Holmes Mysteries” written by Nancy
Springer. The film adaptation of this novel is directed by Harry Bradbeer ,from a screenplay by Jack
Thorne. The film is set to land on September 23 at 8am on Netflix. The story is about the young sister of
a well-known detective named Sherlock Holmes, who goes to London to find her missing mother who
disappeared on the day of her sixteenth birthday. Enola Holmes is a feminist film about Sherlock’s sister
who is making her own path instead of following her brother’s path.

Enola has two choices whether to become a proper Victorian lady or a lady who freely do what she
wants. Her mother, Eudoria, give her a card that reads, “Our future is up to us.” This film shows that we
are the only person who can control our future. On the day of her sixteenth birthday, Eudoria left her
daughter with codes to decipher by Enola. She decided to go to London to find her missing mother.
Unfortunately, he met an escaped Viscount Lord and messed in her journey. Her two brothers, Sherlock
and Mycroft, sent her into a finishing school to be a proper Victorian lady but the guy he met in train,
Lord Tewkesbury, helped her to escaped. They discovered that the disappearance of her mother and the
case about the missing Marquess are connected by an issue which is the upcoming vote on a reform bill.

At the beginning of the movie, Enola explained the meaning of her name which is the reciprocal of
“Alone”. When her mother left her, she struggles with the idea that her mother left her in her own will
and she would be forever lonely. However, Enola tried her best to break free in the shadow of her family
which is made up of genius brains and create her own path to live on.

Due to the Eudoria’s disappearance, the Holmes brothers return home and give Enola a proper
education that against her will. Enola does not want that kind of life so she decided to escape. A
refreshing element of the story is that Enola never doubts her strengths and smarts. She proves that she
can decipher codes on her own and hold off an attacker that probably leave the rest of Victorian high
society clutching their pearls.

The main goal of Enola in the first scenario of the movie is to find her mother but she ultimately find
herself instead. At the end of the movie, She declared that our life is our own and the future is up to us.
This optimistic ending can help people who experienced a lot of struggles in their life and does not want
to continue. This film shows us a hope that our futures and our lives can be shaped by ourselves.
