v) The part is acceptable, given that the selected part is a unit of product 2.
vi) The part is product 1, given that the selected part is acceptable.
vii) The part is product 3, given that the selected part is unacceptable.
(b) What is the difference between the states of statistical independence and
statistical dependence?
Q. 2 Unemployment statistics within a wester state indicate that 6 percent of those eligible
to work are unemployed. Suppose that an experiment is conducted where three
persons are selected at random and their employment status is noted. If the random
variable for this experiment is defined as the number of persons unemployed:
(12+8=20)
(a) Construct the probability distribution for this experiment and determine the
probability that:
i) None of three is unemployed.
ii) Or two or more are employed.
(b) Find a formula for the probability distribution of the number of boys in
families with three children assuming equal probabilities for boys and girls.
(b) The average size of farms in the United State increased from 100 acres in
1920 to 700 acres in 1980. Let y be the average size x years after 1900. In
what year was the average size 400 acres?
Q. 5 (a) The value of machine is expected to decrease at a liner rate over the time. Two
data points indicate that the value of the machine at t=0 (time of purchase) is
$18,000 and its value in 1 year will equal $14,500. (10+10=20)
i) Determine the slope intercept equation (V = mt + k) which relates the
value V of the machine to its age t.
ii) Interpret the meaning of the slope and V intercept.
iii) Solve for the t intercept and interpret its meaning.

(b) Solve the given system of equations by using Cramer’s rule.
x1 – 4x2 + x3 = 12
7x1 –6x3 = 18
2x2 + 5x3 = 7
(b) Living standards are defined by the total output of goods and services
divided by the total population. In the United States during the 1980s, living
standards were closely approximated by
where x=0 corresponds to 1981. Find the derivative of f. Use the derivative
to find the rate of change in living standards in the following years.

(v) What do your answers to part (i) – (iv) tell you about living standards in
those years?

Q. 4 (a) Find critical points of the given functions. Use second derivate test on each
critical point to determine whether it leads to a relative maximum or
minimum.
f(x) = x4, –32x2 + 7 (14+6=20)
(b) Determine the location and values of the absolute maximum and
absolute minimum for the given function.
f(x) = (–x + 2)4, where 0 x 3
Q. 5 (a) Find fx, fy, fz, fyx, fxz, fzy, fy,(2, –1, 3), fyz, (–1, 1, 0), if (12+8=20)
f(x, y, z) =
(b) Suppose z = f (x, y) describes the cost to build a certain structure, where x
represents the labor costs and y represents the cost of materials. Describe
what fx and fy represent.
