Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Number Sense and how numbers can be represented.

Objectives:
Students will be able to identify and utilize structures and patterns.
Students will be able to analyze what is given, make sense of problems, and persevere in solving
them.
Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding with the use of critical thinking skills to
justify mathematical reasoning and critique the reasoning of others.
State Standards:
South Carolina’s kindergarten Mathematical Process Standards:
- K.NS.3 Read numbers from 0 – 20 and represent a number of objects 0 – 20 with a written
numeral.
-K.NS.4 Understand the relationship between number and quantity. Connect counting to
Cardinality.
-K.NS.5 Count a given number of objects from 1 – 20 and connect this sequence in a one-to-one
manner.
Context:
As a teacher, it is very important to introduce numbers as early as possible, even before
preschool. It is necessary to teach all students basic counting skills so that by the time
kindergarten comes around students will be able to advance into practicing different forms of
number sense and learning new ways to include math in daily activities. Before teaching this
lesson, it is important that students know how to count to 20, then we will teach the student how
to count to 100 and so on. Students will bring all different forms of previous knowledge
depending on how the student was raised, previous education, etc. After this lesson, the next
lesson would be Number Sense and Base Ten. Students need to be taught basic number sense
before being able to move forward.
Data:
At the beginning of this lesson, all children will be gathered around on the carpet as I project
numbers onto the whiteboard. I will repeat the basic number counting to 100 and demonstrate
basic math knowledge. With all students grouped on the carpet, students will participate in their
understanding on the whiteboard. After presenting mathematical videos and games on the
whiteboard based on number sense all students will be given a practice sheet to be taken back to
their desks to work on.

Detailed paragraphs from here on down.

Procedures:
Introduction –( 25 minutes): I will start off this lesson by making all of my students
come and sit on the carpet. After my students settle down, I will put up a PowerPoint on the
whiteboard an image of a number. I will start off by grabbing my kindergarteners' attention, I
will grab my students' attention by starting off my lesson by telling my students to “put their
binoculars and put your binoculars on the screen” and then proceed to show my students a
number and have them tell me what it is. This number can be presented in any form making my
students have to count the objects, letters, numbers, etc. Once my students guess the correct
answer and say it all together as a big class, I will congratulate them for doing a great job. I will
make the introduction fun and exciting allowing all students to participate and be involved in
learning a little math fun with numbers. I will excite my students by changing it up and asking
them to respond with an answer in a different form such as a baby voice, then make sure to
congratulate all students with a big pat on the back for getting the correct answer.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes): In this portion of the lesson, I will get my students to
count from 1 to 100. This will be after we completed the first part of the lesson. I will be
interacting with my students and then showing a form of excitement for getting the answer
correct. After a few examples, I will present the YouTube video “Number Sense Math Games
For Kindergarten” by TwoFish. This video is a great video that shows fun number sense
activities. This video is a math game that can be presented on the whiteboard. This YouTube
video comes with three different difficulty levels to play. Throughout this lesson, the students
will be accomplishing the last level. This YouTube video will be fun math activity for my
kindergarteners.

Collaborative ( 20 minutes): As a kindergarten teacher, most lessons are taught while all
students are gathered around the carpet. No matter what lesson is being taught a fun activity gets
placed on the Whiteboard. The activities that get placed on the Whiteboard are typically
collaborative for the students to participate and learn together. Usually, kindergarten students do
not have access to independent digital activities so instead, the collaborative activity will be an
app called “Number+Sense” by Knomadix Corp. This app can be projected on the Whiteboard
allowing all students to collaborate and interact with their other classmates. This app has
engaging activities that help children master basic math skills, strengthen critical thinking, and
foster spatial reasoning. Number+Sense can also be used at home with the help of their parents.
This app is said to improve “scores by 60% and confidence by 100%.” This app will be used to
help educate my students and will allow my students to collaborate with each other. My students
will learn numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc. just from this one app.

Independent Digital (20 minutes): For this part of the lesson, the independent digital
work will be changed a little to work with my grade level. My kindergarten students will work
independently on a worksheet about number sense that correlates with what my students have
learned. The worksheet will be independently worked on. Each student will go back to their
assigned seat and will be handed a number sense worksheet like the one attached above. My
students will work independently with my help as needed. When all students finish their
independent work, I will then collect it all and then bring students back to the carpet for carpet
time to go over what we just learned in this entire lesson.

Closure (10 minutes): At the end of the lesson, my students are going to go over what
they have learned for the day. My students are going to go back to the carpet and sit crisscross
applesauce and sit quietly. Once my students sit down and settle, I am going to go over some of
the key things that my students should have learned from the lesson that I just taught on Number
Sense. I will make sure that all students are waiting to be called on instead of calling out. After
spending a few minutes going over what we learned for the day, I will present this video for
closure. This YouTube video is called “I Can Show Numbers in So Many Ways” by Jack
Hartmann.
Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
(Multimedia 1= App or website): Why this piece of multimedia? How does it support
student learning and your standards and objectives? How do you know it is of high-
quality? Evaluate this multimedia against the LORI criteria in the 406: Evaluating
Multimedia module to support your rationale. How does this multimedia choice
differentiate instruction for all learners (consider differentiation and assistive
technologies)?
When it comes to the first app that I am going to introduce to my students is this app
called “Number+Sense” by Knomadix Corp. This app I chose is a great piece of multimedia
because it teaches students all forms of math techniques such as addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division. This app can be used at home as well so students can go home and
use this app after school hours to help practice more foundational math skills. This educational
app is used to keep students engaged. The app is an effective learning skill to help students with
more than just math. As a kindergarten teacher, this Number+Sense app is important to teach
basic math skills but also strengthen critical thinking and help with fostering spatial reasoning.
When it comes to the LORI criteria in 406, it states that LORI stands for “Learning
Object Review Instrument”, which is an evaluation aid available through the E-Learning
Research and Assessment Network. When it comes to my chosen app Number+Sense, this app
supports my rationale because it follows the goals related to LORI. This educational app
provides feedback and adaption, motivation, learning goal alignment, presentation designs, etc.
all in this one app. This app will differentiate instruction for all learners because it has levels that
introduce new skills. So, all learners can participate at their level and speed. This app provides
immediate feedback so that all learners can see their mistakes and continue to practice. This app
has useful hints that are provided through its Al which is an assisted virtual teaching assistant.
The app is fun and gives children motivation to learn and educate. The app is presented in an
easy-to-use setup. There are sounds and effects that the app uses which is another good useful tip
for a teacher. Current studies have shown how regular use of this app has improved scores by
60% and confidence by 100%.

(Multimedia 2= App, website, video, educational game, song, podcast, etc.): Why this
piece of multimedia? How does it support student learning and your standards and
objectives? How do you know it is of high-quality? Evaluate this multimedia against the
LORI criteria in the 406: Evaluating Multimedia module to support your rationale. How
does this multimedia choice differentiate instruction for all learners (consider
differentiation and assistive technologies)?
As we continue to learn basic math skills, I will present my kindergarteners with two
YouTube videos. These are used to help students who are more visual learners become
introduced to and interested in math. The first video that I will present to my classroom is a
video called “Number Sense Math Games For Kindergarten” by TwoFish. This educational
video is a fun number sense video that will engage my students in learning number sense. If this
video is used along with the app “Number+Sense” it will be a fun yet educational activity to
keep kindergarteners engaged. The publishers have 3.5k subscribers and have listed more
educational videos to present to kindergarteners.
When it comes to the LORI criteria this educational YouTube video follows along with
the criteria. The YouTube video provided content quality which this “content validity, potential
effectiveness as a teaching-learning tool, and ease of use.” This video can also be used at home
and has three different levels for the students to practice and accomplish. This video also tests
students' knowledge and skill just like the app Number+Sense did as well. The video gives
kindergartener students motivation and is easy to engage at young ages. The YouTube video is a
great form of interactive usability in which all students can participate while gathered on the
carpet together. This multimedia video is a great form of visual education for all types of
learners, it allows all students to become engaged which is very important in teaching at such a
young age.
The next form of multimedia, I will present to my students is another YouTube video this
video is called “I Can Show Numbers In So Many Ways” by Jack Hartmann. This publisher has
3.52M subscribers and this video has had 2.6M views since published. This video is a great
video that can help students see examples of different ways numbers can be presented. This
video is a little different from the previous video shared with students. Thus, the video gives
students a chance to “identify and say how each of the next sets of numbers is represented in
each of the ways they have shown” in this math number song. This YouTube song shows
examples of different ways numbers can be represented; numerals, words, five-frame, ten-frame,
tallies, pictures, number lines, dominoes, fingers, and numerals.
This video is shown in a song matter, which has lyrics that all students can sing and learn
together at the same time. This video just like the rest will engage the students and will give
them the motivation to learn more. This video provides a different form of teaching technique so
that all students can have the ability to grasp what is being taught. This video follows LORI
criteria in a way that the previous app and YouTube do. This video can be used at home so that
the students can continue learning and practicing in their own homes. This video allows students
to interact and quicky grasps the directions and return content as a group. This video also
presents an effective design for young students to be intrigued in learning more. The video can
clearly be used more than once; the same as the other chosen tools to use in this lesson plan. All
my choices help with state standers when it comes to kindergarten math.
