AA - Open Window, Collioure, 1905, Fauvism, Oil on Canvas by Henri Matisse

DESCRIBE
The Open Window, Collioure by Henri Martisse made in 1905 which is a Fauvist style of
painting and its medium is an oil in canvas. It is a large French open window with a dimension
of 55.3 x 46 cm. The view outside the window of his residence at Collioure, on the southern
coast of France, is depicted in the painting The Open Window. From Matisse's hotel window
overlooking the harbor, we see sailboats on the water. In Paris, particularly during his time in
Nice and Etretat, and in his later years, particularly in the late 1940s, he constantly returned to
the motif of the open window.

ANALYZE
The Open Window in Collioure showcases light colors that were thoughtfully chosen and
exude a serene aura. The brightest part of the canvas is colored pink and red, and there are also
some green leafy vines, colorful boats in the harbor, and some dark colors on the upper
window. The balcony, which has flower pots on the floor, serves as a narrow transitional area
between the room and the view of the harbor, which extends to the horizon. In addition to
serving as the background or accent of the composition, the window opening in Martisse’s
painting also acts as a metaphor for progress, optimism, and taking a step towards the
unknown.

BB - Water Lilies (1906) Impressionism by Claude Monet

DESCRIBE
The Water Lilies of Claude Monet made in 1906 which is a Impressionist style of painting and
its medium is an oil on canvas. It is a painting of water lilies with a dimension of 89.9 × 94.1 cm.
The painting water lilies is actually a series of approximately 250 oil paintings. But the painting
shown is the one Monet did in 1906. The paintings, in general, show his Giverny home's flower
garden.

INTERPRET
The use of complementary hues to give the artwork a more lively appearance. Blue was utilized
by Monet for the water, green was used for the lilies and parts of the leaves, and a hint of pink
was used for some of the blooms. It is a picture of pond water lilies. The series' pieces were
created with the intention of giving "the appearance of an unending whole, of water without
limit or boundary."

CC - Still Life with a Bordeaux Boflle (Stilleben mit Bordeuauxflasche) 1919) by Juan
Gris

DESCRIBE
The Still Life with a Bordeaux Bottle by Juan Gris made in 1919 which is a Cubist style of
painting and its medium is an oil on canvas. It is a painting of abstract art with a dimension of
50 x 61 cm. It is an abstract cut out paper collage.

JUDGE
The painting Still Life with a Bordeaux Bottle is an abstract painting which I can’t honestly tell
what the painting wanted to convey unlike other cubism arts which can be interpreted easily.
But it shows cut out papers with the word Bordeaux on it and is on a red carpet. I can also tell
that it has woodlike images on it.

DD - Seated Man (Homme Assis), 1914, Cubism by Roger de la Fresnaye

ANALYZE
The Seated Man of Roger de la Fresnaye made in 1914 which is a Cubist style of painting and its
medium is an oil on canvas. It is a painting of a seated man with a dimension of 61 x 75 cm. The
Seated Man is one of Fresnaye’s work before he leave for the front.

INTERPRET
In this piece of art, Fresnaye employs a conservative application of cubist principles and
techniques, transforming natural forms into a symmetrically harmonious arrangement of
streamlined planes and arcs presented in bright, clear color. A man is seated and has his arm
resting on something in the image. It can be regarded as an indication of power, bossiness, or
leadership on the part of the man.

EE - Cavalière, 1905, Impressionism by Henri Manguin

ANALYZE
The Cavaliere by Henri Manguin made in 1905 which is an Impressionist style of painting and
its medium is an oil on canvas. It is a painting of a nude woman with a dimension of 92 x 73.2
cm.It shows a light and bright palette of a nude woman sitting on a stone in a sea with a
background of endless sea water and a huge block of stone. I interpret it as Manguin spending
time with the love of his life and painting her as a sign of his love and appreciation for the
woman.

JUDGE
The painting was wonderfully painted and I can feel the love of Manguin for her wife by
looking at the image. He adores her wife very much and wanted to portray his love for her
through his paintings.

FF - Good hope II (Pastoral), 1945, Abstract Expressionism by Arshile Gorky

INTERPRET
The Good Hope II by Arshile Gorky made in 1945 which is an Abstract Expressionist style of
painting and its medium is an oil on canvas. It is an abstract painting with a dimension of 64.7 x
82.7 cm. In the artwork, two bodies are embraced and illuminated by the fire. The area indicates
a fireplace due to the black tone. It illustrates how love and calm feel in a happy existence. Bold
lines, biomorphic patterns, and small, sparsely-overlapping regions of diluted color are some of
the techniques he employed. It has delicate hues that show the painter's composure. Both the
heart and the mind are drawn to the painting because of its spiritual quality. It produces a
surreal environment that depicts a life that everyone desires. to live a life devoid of problems
and challenges.

JUDGE
The painting, for a normal person or for people who can’t understand art, it would look like a
sad or chaotic painting but it is actually a painting that could inspire. It shows a wonderful
emotion of love.
