Lab 9 - MOSFETs and MOSFET circuits

The purpose of this lab is to understand the functions of MOSFET transistors, both PMOS and
NMOS transistors and testing their functions as well as their effects on current and voltage, depending
on the configuration of each circuit.

Part A

After measuring values in the built circuit, we could see how they are fairly close to the calculated
values. See figure 1:

a b c d
VDS 1.1 V 12.4 V 5.1 V -5.82 V

VGS 5V 5V 5.1 V -6 V

Expected iD 4 mA 1.18mA 1.32 mA 4 mA

VDS 1.1 V 11.2 V 5.06 V -2.2 V

VGS 5.01 V 5V 5.06 V -6 V

Measured iD 4.03 mA 1.19mA 1.3 mA 4 mA

Part B

We built both circuits and measured their values as VGS varied. The resulting measurements can be
seen on Figure 2:

Part C

Building the MOSFET and op-amp circuit, we obtained a circuit that functions as a switch. See Figure
3.

Part D
In part D we saw what the effects the mosfet had on a small signal input. We did both a 3v offset and a
5v offset. There will be a noticeable difference in gain between the 2 and this is possibly due to the DC
offset forcing the MOSFET into it’s saturation state leading to an attenuation of the signal instead of
amplification.
3 VOLTS OFFSET:

Figure 4 - measured values when using a 3 volt offset

Shown above is the 3v offset wave form from this we can see that the output (shown by the green
wave) is amplified by 5.36 V/V and is well within the triode, or linear, region of the MOSFET allowing
the signal to be amplified by a large amount
5 VOLTS OFFSET:

Figure 5 - measured values when using a 5 volts offset

The 5v offset however is actually attenuated and it’s gain is 0.135 V/V as it is higher into the linear
region possibly reaching the saturation region as well.

Conclusion
After working with the circuits proposed in the lab, we found the functioning requirements for
MOSFETS, as well as some of their applications and effects on current and voltage. By observing how
these transistors work, we noticed how vital these components are for electronics.
