Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the ability to verbally present informative speeches. (A3)

2. Demonstrate the ability to verbally present idea pitching and persuasive speeches. (A3)

3. Display appropriate values and attitudes when presenting informative and persuasive
speeches. (A5)

Course Description

This course is designed for students to develop the strategies and skills necessary for
effective oral presentations. Guidance is provided from the preparatory right up to the final stage
of delivery. The course focuses on oral communication theory and practice with emphasis on
the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Learning takes place through
a variety of activitiesto enhance learners’ ability to use the correct language for a presentation,
to exploit a variety of materials and sources, and to use visual aids appropriately in oral
presentations. In tandem, students will be exposed to basic computer skills as speech
activities are to be recorded and uploaded using a variety of formats. Upon completion of the
course, students will develop skills to participate in speech communication activities
confidently and competently.

Syllabus Content

1. Understanding basic principles of speech communication (the importance of speaking


effectively in public, speech communication process, the importance of ethics in speaking
and listening, effective listening)

2. Understanding the theoretical aspects of informative and persuasive speeches


● Guidelines for informative speeches:
o Estimate the audience’s knowledge of the topic of the speech
o Relate the subject directly to the audience
o Explore different types of attention getter appropriate to speech topics
o Present facts and figures presented in charts and/or graphs
o Describe, analyze, conclude and make appropriate recommendation
o Use language and terminology that is appropriate and comprehensible for
research findings
o Personalize the speech

● Guidelines for persuasive Speeches


o Estimate the audience’s knowledge of the topic of the speech
o Relate the subject directly to the audience
o Use language and terminology that is comprehensible
o Personalize the speech
o Build credibility
o Develop pitching skills
o Use evidence to persuade

3. Preparing and delivering the presentations

● Researching topics and collecting materials (brainstorming, screening of topics,


determining scope, relevance and depth of topic)
● Determining presentation aims and structure (purpose, audience, time
management)
● Preparing the speech outline
● Using accurate, appropriate, and comprehensive language
● Using verbal and non-verbal aspects of delivery
● Determining and designing visual aids (suitability, usefulness, interaction
using visual aids)
● Making appropriate conclusions and recommendations
