THE FIRST VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD BY MAGELLAN

● Italian Nobleman
● His travelogue is one of the most important primary sources in the study of precolonial
Philippines.
● He wrote his travelogue from his own perspective.
● He published the First Voyage Around the World By Magellan after he returned to Italy.
● Their fleet reached what he called the Ladrones Islands.

one of the important primary sources in the study of the precolonial in the Philippines
● Presently known as the Marianas Islands
● Located at the south-southeast of Japan, west-southeast of Hawaii, north of New Guinea,
and east of Philippines.
● Pigafetta recounted that “These people have no arms, but use sticks, which have a fish
bone at the end. They are poor, but ingenious, and great thieves, and for the sake of that
we called these three islands the Ladrones Islands.”
● Ten days after they reached Ladrones islands, they reached what pigafetta called the
island of Zamal
● Magellan decided to land in another uninhabited island for greater security for greater
security
● After 2 days (March 18) nine men approached and welcomed them with foods: fish, palm
wine(uraca), figs, two cochos, rice (umai), cocos, and other food supplies.
● The fleet went to Humunu Island

HUMUNU ISLAND “Homonhon”

There they found what Pigafetta referred to as the “Watering Place of Good Signs”

The place where pigafetta wrote that they found the first signs of gold

They named the island with the nearby island as the archipelago of St.Lazarus.

MARCH 25
● They left the island of Humunu Island
● A long boat (balangay/ballanghai) full of people in Mazzava/Mazaua helped Magellan with
money for the needs of his ships
● Magellan expressed that he came as a friend and not as an enemy and he boasted his
men wearing armor. The king was fascinated and remarked that men in such armor is
worth one hundred of his men.
● Magellan also showed the king his other weapons such as helmets and arteries but it
didn’t stop there because Magellan also showed his charts and maps including the way
how they found the islands
● After a few days, they met the king’s brother named Raia Calambu and they went to his
island Zuluan and Calagan

Magellan and his crew decided to move and look for island where they could aquire more
supplies and provisions.
After eight days, Pigafetta counted that all of the Island’s inhabitant were already baptized and
his crew admitted that they burned a village down for obeying neither the king nor
Magellan.
When the queen came to the mass, Magellan give the queen an image of infant Jesus made by
Pigafetta himself. Then the king of Cebu swore to Magellan that he will be faithful to him, and
Magellan told to them that they need to burn their idols and be put their faith on Jesus.
On the 26th of April
Zula
• principal man from the island of Matan (Mactan) went to see Magellan and asked him for a
boat full of men so that he would be able to fight the chief named Silapulapu (Lapulapu).
Magellan get a shoot of his leg and didn’t get move because of a poisoned arrow that hit on
him, Magellan was the specifically target of the natives because they knew that Magellan
is the leader of the group
Magellan get died after the battle, and his crew that survive the battle was back to the ship to
cure their wounds.
Summary

Because of Pigafetta’s documents, it proves that the earth is not flat and proves that all people
in different country have their own beliefs, cultures and tradition, and they have their own
different kind of spices.
It also shows the trade of resources in other country also the start of the religion catholic in the
Philippines.
