EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
1.1. INTRODUCTION
This report presents results of geotechnical investigation for “Development of
Railway siding for Shiva cement limited taking-off from Sogra Railway
station under chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway”. This work
was performed by M/s. NBSP Consultants Pvt. Ltd, Angul which was assigned by
Shiva Cement Limited (a unit of jsw). At the proposed site 02 number of bore hole
was drilled to know the sub-strata and design SBC. Conclusions and recommendation
presented in this report are based on our current knowledge of the proposed location,
subsurface conditions encountered at exploration site and results of laboratory
testing. These conclusions and recommendations should not be extrapolated to other
areas without our prior review.
2.1. PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF SERVICES
The purpose of the current geotechnical investigation was to explore and
determine the existing sub-strata conditions such as stratification, denseness or
hardness of the strata, position of ground water table at the location etc. and to
evaluate approximate range of safe bearing capacity for the proposed structure using
empirical formulas provided in the relevant IS codes. The goal of our investigation was
to identify the key geotechnical issues that could potentially impact the proposed
project and to develop geotechnical recommendations for design and construction of
the project.
Our scope of services included the following tasks:
Field marking of boring locations.
Drilling of 02 number of bore hole (BR NO-13) up to required depth as instructed
by the engineer in-charge of the concern department.
Bore holes were drilled below the respective existing ground level in order to know
the sub surface stratification, conducting necessary field tests and collection of
sub-strata samples for laboratory testing.
Testing of soil samples in the laboratory to determine its physical and engineering
properties and analyzing all field and laboratory data to evaluate bearing capacity
of the sub-strata for given foundation sizes.
3. A. FIELD INVESTIGATIONS
By using rotary drilling rigs, the boreholes were progressed up to desired depth.
Rotary method of boring is most widely used method of advancing a boreholes.
This method along with use of drilling mud to stabilize the side of the borehole
is likely to give the least disturbance to soils beneath the base of the borehole
and permit taking near to truly undisturbed samples. Diameter of boreholes
was 150 mm.
02 no of Bore hole was drilling up to required depth as specified. The following
in-situ tests have been conducted:
a. Boring works including Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) as per IS
9640:1980 & IS 2131:1988.
b. Observation of Ground water table (GWT) in the bore holes.
c. Preparation of location map of testing site.
a. The table below shows the total no. of boreholes with max explored
depth and concerned water table.
3. C. PROCEDURE
ii. Sampling: Representing soil samples were collected from bore holes at
different depth of the soil strata confirming to IS 1892-1979. The samples
were properly sealed in sampling polythenes and labeled for correct
identification for testing. The disturbed soil samples were used for visual
classification of soil of soils as per IS 1498-1970. All possible care has been
taken while collecting the soil samples.
sampler from the drill holes at each cohesive stratum below the ground
level.
In case of refusal strata (N>50) hard strata (Laterite Rock), bore hole is
reduced to NX (76mm) for drilling. Laterite rock coring has been carried out
using diamond bits or tungsten carbide (T.C) bits. Bits were attached to
the core barrels of double tube type in rotary core drilling. For diamond
core drilling IS: 6926-1982 was followed. Bore logs showing field data of
each borehole has been attached in this report.
4. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS
The soil samples obtained from the borings are further tested in the testing
laboratory at Angul in accordance with relevant Indian Standard Code of
Practices and the geotechnical properties are obtained for use in arriving at the
safe bearing capacity of the founding strata. The results so obtained have been
brought out in a comprehensive manner according to the codes for use by the
Design Engineer during finalization of foundation of the structure.
In this case the following tests have been conducted in the laboratory at Angul
according to Indian Standards mentioned below:

7.0. CONCLUSION :
The sub soil investigation has been carried out for “Development of Railway
siding for Shiva cement limited taking-off from Sogra Railway station under
chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway.” This work was performed
by M/s. NBSP Consultants Pvt. Ltd., Anugul which was assigned by Shiva Cement
Limited (a unit of jsw).
Site stratigraphy:
From BR NO-13, it was observed that Compressible Clay stratum is present up to
maximum depth of exploration.
Ground water table was measured after 24 hrs of boring. At this site, the ground
water level was found below the existing G.L.
Foundation Recommendations:
The following conclusions, suggestions and remarks are made based on the available
test data and sub-soil profiles as per bore logs contained in this report.
Based on the provision of proposed structure and properties of the sub-strata
present at site, isolated footing at 4.5 m depth may be adopted, considering
a safe bearing pressure of 12 T/m2 for 25 mm permissible settlement.
This general recommendation is not structure-specific and the designer is at liberty to decide
the depth and the type of foundation intended basing on the sub-soil characteristics and
abstract of SBP under Clause no. 6.1 made available in this report.
