Rationale
Background

This course was created after many of my original YouTube lessons

gained traction on social media. I was inundated with comments and
positive feedback about the lesson content as well as the simplistic
lesson format.

Lesson Format

The lesson format was created out of much of my own frustration

with watching various online drumming lessons and tutorials. I
would painstakingly sift through a 15-20min tutorial looking for the
‘nuggets of gold’ (the demonstration and the transcription). As an
experienced and learned drummer, I didn’t need to sit through 5
minutes of introductions and have an instructor explain to me what
an Inversion Paradiddle is and how to count various basic rhythms. I
just want to see the demonstration, the transcription as well as see
the pattern slowed down with a metronome in the background. After
a bit of experimenting, I arrived at this 7-step method of presenting
my material and attempted to create a system and course that I
would want to follow. That is the background and reasoning behind
creating this course of 7-step video lessons.

Content

There is a wide variety of content available online at the moment but

the area of ‘drum chops’ or ‘gospel chops’ is not particularly well
covered. Instead of creating a course for beginners on the
development of chops (that will come later), I decided to analyse and
break down some of the patterns that I actually use in my playing and
create an advanced course. I also decided to get creative and write
new patterns and linear sequences to push my own playing as well.
I’m not the most natural of players and rely more on a systematic
approach to drumming. I like to break patterns down into their
simplest form and cut a paste the ideas together into sequences. I like
to see things written down and when I started teaching, transcribing
and writing music, I found that my playing began to excel and I was
able to improvise and create musical ideas at a much higher level.

The chops/licks/fills presented in this course are nothing new or

special (I’m sure they have been played many times before by players
much more proficient than myself), but the uniqueness lies in how
the material it is organised and presented. My aim is to present to
you a variety of fun, challenging and inspiring linear fills that you can
copy, practice and internalise. After you have spent enough time
developing your technique and playing these fills, you should be able
to improvise freely and create your own patterns and phrases.

7-step Lesson Structure

Overview

All of the lessons in this course follow the same 7-step lesson
structure.

1. Demonstration
2. Breaking It Down – Phrasing Exercise
3. Putting It Together I – 16th Note Combination Exercise
4. Putting it together II – 32nd Note Combination Exercise
5. Fill Applications I – 2 Beat Fills

Lesson Structure - Explanation

1. Demonstration – The featured Lick/Fill/Chop is played @ 65

or 70 BPM after 2 bars of a drum groove and repeated several
times from two angles. Example

2. Breaking It Down – Phrasing Exercise

The featured Lick/Fill/Chop is then broken down into four
manageable phrases so it is easier to learn. It is further
converted into 16th Notes and placed in an exercise with a one
bar rest in between each section. The phrasing exercises are
played at 50 BPM. Example

The PDF lesson also contains a summary of the 32nd Note

Phrases in 2/4 as well as the 16th Note Phrases in 4/4 that are
not included in the video lesson.

3. Putting It Together I – 16th Note Combination Exercise

Phrases 1-4 are placed into a combination exercise so the

transitions between the phrases can be practiced. Example

4. Putting It Together II – 32nd Note Combination Exercise

Phrases 1-4 are then converted back into their original form as
32nd Notes and placed into an exercise. Example

5. Fill Applications I – 2 Beat Fills

Each 32nd Note phrase is then applied as a 2 beat fill within 2 bars
of groove. Example

6. Fill Applications II – 1 Bar 32nd Note Fills

Phrases 1+2 and 3+4 are then combined into 1 Bar 32nd Note fills.
Example

7. The Finished Product

The featured Chop/Lick/Fill is played again in its final form @ 65

or 70 BPM as a demonstration.

Breaking It Down – 32nd Note Phrases

I have broken the chop/fill down into four manageable two beat 32nd
Note phrases. It is much easier to learn each phrase individually
rather than tackle the whole two bars as one exercise.

Practise Phrases 1-4 individually and gradually increase the tempo.

Phrase 4

Tip: When practising the phrases, intentionally over-exaggerate the dynamics.

Eg Play the accents at shoulder height and keep the ghost notes under 5cm.

Combination Fills

In the following 5 lessons, you will see examples of fills that I have
created by combining 4 phrases together from the Phrase Banks. All
you need to do now is pick out some phrases and arrange them in
different sequences to challenge yourself. Make sure you choose and
select your phrases carefully so you don’t create any awkward
patterns like 3 or 4 right hands, left hands or kicks in a row. So to
recap, your task is to practise the 5 combination fills I have given you
and then start using the phrase banks to create fills of your own. I
hope you start to see now that the possibilities for making new licks,
fills and Chops sequences are endless.

TASK 1 – Learn and master Combination Fills 1-5

TASK 2 – Use the Phrase Banks to create you own Fills

Breaking It Down – 32nd Note Phrases

I have broken the chop/fill down into four manageable two beat 32nd
Note phrases. It is much easier to learn each phrase individually
rather than tackle the whole two bars as one exercise.

Practise Phrases 1-4 individually and gradually increase the tempo.

Phrase 1 - Friday Fapper (Phrase 2)

Phrase 2 (Brass Bandit (Phrase 2)

Phrase 3 – Funky Diddler (Phrase 2)

Phrase 4 – Big Rig (Phrase 4)

When practising the phrases, intentionally over-exaggerate the dynamics. Eg

Play the accents at shoulder height and keep the ghost notes under 5cm.

3 Piece Fills
In the following Section, you will learn to play five 3 Piece Linear 32nd
Note Fills.

I created this section of the course to show that you don’t need to
have a large and extensive Drum Kit in front of you to showcase your
chops. I am finding that these days my gigging kit is getting smaller
and smaller and is often reduced to just 3 pieces. Playing with three
pieces is of great benefit because it makes you be more creative and
forces you to make the most of what you’ve got.

At this stage of the course you should be getting faster at decoding

and learning the Chop Sequences. The following 5 lessons are fast-
tracked lessons and only include 4 parts.

Lesson Structure

1. Demonstration @ 60 BPM

2. Breaking It Down – Super Slow

3. Putting It Together – 32nd Note Combination Exercise @ 80 BPM

Shredding
Example Phrases 1-10
In this lesson you will see a collection of 10 Phrases that you can use
as ‘go-to’ licks when you are improvising. These Phrases work well as
stand-alone fills on their own and sound great at high speeds.

These phrases have been taken from the fills in the previous sections
of the course. Practise these phrases over and over paying attention
to your dynamics and gradually increase the tempo.

The Full Video Lesson/Demonstration is available in the Advanced

Improvising
It’s time to start using the phrases, sticking and orchestrations you
have learned in this course and start improvising on your own.

TASK – Put on a slow metronome and begin playing various phrases

from the phrase banks and combine them into an improvised solo.
Keep it slow so you have time to think. Add in your own sticking’s,
orchestrations and kick patterns and get comfortable transitioning
between your different ideas and transitioning smoothly. Do this for
minutes at a time or until you run out of ideas. You can always go
back to single strokes, rudiments or just leave some space if you run
out patterns to play.

It may take weeks or months to develop confidence improvising with

these patterns but persistence is the key. Gradually increase the
tempo if your improvisation sessions and flow will come.

Conclusion

I hope you have enjoyed the Advanced 32nd Note Chops Course. I
have had a lot of fun creating it and have really enjoyed writing,
recording and presenting these ideas. You’re at the end of this course
now, but it’s really only the beginning because there is a lot more
work to do. You can always play these fills cleaner, faster and
smoother and I hope you revisit this material over and over and have
many hours of enjoyable and challenging practise ahead. It’s your job
to take these ideas, make them your own, build upon them and work
them into your game.

Congratulations and thank you for completing this course. It was a

pleasure making this material for you and my drumming has
improved a great deal as a result as well.

Cheers!
