GAS LAWS

Relationship beween
Pressure and Volumes
In 1662, Robert Boyle (1627 - 11691) studied the

relationship betwen pressure and volume in

gases.Through the use of vacuum pumps, he was able to

measure the pressure exerted by his sample towards its

container when in being compressed. He used different

types of gases to verify his own observation. He then

eventually came up with the law that is known today as

Boyle's Law.
BOYLE'S LAW
States that under constant temperature and

amount of gas, the volume of any given

amount of gas is inversely proportional to the

pressure exerted on it .
A. Decreasing the pressure B. Increasing the pressure
increases the volume of gases idecreases the volume of gases
Given three of the following four quantities:

Rearrange the equation algebraically to solve for the unknown quantity

An equation that can be used to calculate the unknown quantity

will be one of thr following 4:

Substitute each of the known quantities and calculate

PROBLEM SOLVING
INVOLVING BOYLE'S LAW
The pressure exerted by a gas sample in a 500-mL container is 1.35 atm. What pressure

will the same amount of gas exert if the volume is decreased to 196 mL while

temperature is held constant?

STEP 1: Determine the given in the problem

STEP 2: Manipulate the equation of Boyle's law based on the missing variable

STEP 3: Substitute the values in the manipulated formula.

BOYLE'S LAW
A high-altitude balloon contains 30.0L of helium
gas at 103.0 kPa. What is the volume when the
balloon rises to an altitude where the pressure is
only 0.247 atm?
