III. Learning Outcomes:

LO9.1: Determine the tidal condition by Linear Interpolation and Harmonic Prediction
LO9.2: Use Tidal Prediction software in order to obtain relevant tidal information
LO9.3: Calculate the under-keel and vertical clearance of the ship for safe passage
IV. Activity Introduction/Information/Directions:

1. Based on our previous discussion, explain briefly the procedure of tidal prediction
concerning height of tide. As a seafarer/navigator, how do you think having this
knowledge can contribute in practicing safety of navigation?
Express your answer in a minimum of 200 words.

- Tides are very important in controlling the depth and flow of water to help ships navigate
easily near the shores. Using the advantage of water level and current of water during high
tides, the ships can reach the harbor conveniently. Tidal differences are compilations of tidal
data between a reference station and a subordinate station. With the aid of the data thus
garnered, ships and boats are relayed about the timing of the occurrence of high and low tides
thus helping them to reach the harbour safe and without encountering any loss. Tides can be
predicted far in advance and with a high degree of accuracy. Tides are forced by the orbital
relationships between the Earth, the moon and the Sun. These relationships are very well
understood and the position of the celestial bodies can be forecast very accurately into the
future. High tides help in navigation. By raising the water level close to shore, tides help
ships enter and leave shallow harbours easily. The tide predications calculate the water level
due to tidal forcing for a particular period in time. Storm surge due to atmospheric pressure
and wind effects is not accounted for in these predictions. On this page, tide predictions can
be created for a 6 day period up to two years in the future.
