1.0 Introduction
Saudi Aramco has taken up the development of Marjan Field Development Downstream Pipelines in eastern region of Saudi

Arabia. The purpose of this project is to provide downstream pipelines to support Marjan field increment and maintain the

Maximum Sustained Capacity (MSC). The Marjan field will produce an additional 200 MBCD of crude starting in 2021 to

supplement the 100 MBCD crude increments from 2018 to 2020, thus bringing the total crude increment to 300 MBCD to the

existing production flowrate of 500 MBCD from 2021 to 2040. This will result in a total crude flowrate of 800 MBCD through

the pipelines system. The project will provide a total of 11 new pipelines to transport AM, sour gas, sales gas, condensate,

NGL and product from new facilities planned in Tanajib area or existing facility to various existing facility locations as well as

end users located in Jubail, Ju'aymah and Ras Tanura. All new pipelines will be installed in the existing SJ-1/SK/KRT corridors

or other existing corridors except some short pipelines that will be connected to the new Tanajib Gas Plant, where there is no

existing pipeline corridor.

Geoharbour Saudi Co LTD has been sub-contracted by Branch of Sinopec International petroleum Service Corporation

as the soil improvement contractors for Package 17.

3.0 Site Geology

The soil investigation work carried out by RGF consisted of exploratory drilling and sampling of the subsurface soil and rock

samples and performance of field tests at designated locations. The borehole locations were decided by the client and marked

in the field by RGF.

3.1 Topography
At the time of investigation, the ground surface at the proposed project sites was varying from 0.10m to 24.50m as per Table

3, Page 117 to 127/730 of Soil Investigation Report Ref. No: PE-GE0025.

3.2 Subsurface Strata

The data obtained through field and laboratory investigations reveal the presence of different lithological units at the project

site. Based on the lithology, the proposed project site could be divided into two different zones as discussed below.

• Sabkha Zone & Non Sabkha Zone

3.2.3 Salt Deposits

Exceptional to the general subsurface strata, SALT Deposits have also been encountered at BH-46A and BH-47 starting from

2.25m and 1.50 depths respectively from existing ground level and extending down to maximum depth of investigation of 5.0

to 15.0m. These Salt deposits are present in hard state.

3.3 Ground Water Condition

Groundwater observations were made for stabilized ground water table, measured after 24 hours or more after completion

of drilling of boreholes. The groundwater table was encountered in the boreholes at varying depths below existing grade level.

The groundwater measurements at boreholes locations are provided in Table 6, Page 136 to 144/730 of Soil Investigation

Report Ref. No: PE-GE0025.

The Ground Water Elevation varies from -1.30m to 5.98m, it should be noted that the groundwater level may experience

seasonal and tidal fluctuations and may have variations of about ±0.80m

4.0 Scope
This document outlines the methods, required materials, equipment and quality control standards to be performed in all

operations during Stone Column construction works for the development of Marjan Field Development Downstream Pipelines

in eastern region of Saudi Arabia.

Stone Column extends the range of soils which can be improved by vibratory techniques, including cohesive soils.

Reinforcement of the soil with compacted granular columns or “stone columns” is accomplished by the top-feed method.

Stone columns are cylindrical columns made below ground level which is comprised of granular material of large sizes varying

from 20 to 100 mm and the small size (<20mm) content less than 10%. A hole is made in the soft deposit by different

techniques and then filled with stones in layers and compacted to form the complete column. When a structure is placed over

the area treated by stone columns, majority of the load could be borne by stone columns. In this case, the diameter of stone

column is 1000 mm.

As a way forward, the testing method as indicated and is expected to demonstrate the following:

➢ Maximum allowable settlement: 25mm;

➢ Minimum Bearing Capacity Requirement: 125kPa;

5.0 Work Procedure

The main sequence for stone column works shall be found below.

5.1 Site Survey and Temporary Bench Marks

The main contractor shall establish the benchmarks at convenient locations well clear of the working area and protected to

allow for aggregate stockpile and movement of loader to and from the stockpile. Surveying will be done by GPS.

5.2 Setting out of Column locations

Locations for Stone columns shall be set out in accordance with shop drawings prepared by GH and approved by consultant.

Stone columns are arranged so as to accommodate varying combinations of load and foundation configuration.

Steel pegs approx. 80 cm long shall be used to mark a Probe location and shall carry a tag identifying the Probe number at

enough intervals. Tolerance for coordinates shall not be more than 5mm.

5.3 Water Supply System

As water is required throughout the process of vibro-replacement wet top feed method, a water source within close distance

to the working area is utilized. The establishment and operation of a temporary water supply to service the vibro works shall

be nearby water source or well point system or deep well system or imported water. The water is pumped into a storage tank

Marjan Field Development Downstream Pipelines (Package 16), KSA

first then goes back to the ground through water jetting (tubes attached to the vibrator). No foreign matter is added to the

water thus ensuring “no contamination” of the water.

5.4 Vibro-Replacement Techniques-Wet Method

For this project, GH will apply wet method for Stone Column Works.

The essential equipment for this process is a vibrator – a long heavy tube enclosing eccentric weights driven by an electric

motor. Extension tubes are added as necessary and the whole assembly is suspended from a crane.

With the electric power and water supply switched on, the vibrator is lowered into the ground. The combination of vibration

and high-pressure water jetting causes liquefaction of the soils surrounding the vibrator that assists in penetration.

Following penetration of the vibrator and its withdrawal after reaching the required depth the resulting cavity is filled with

coarse-grained materials (stone). This supply of material is itself in turn compacted. A stone column is thus formed in which

the stone is laterally pressed into the soil. The stone column and the in-situ soil form an integrated system having low

compressibility and high shear strength. The excess pore water can readily dissipate through the stone columns that act

simultaneously as drains. For this reason, settlement occurs faster than normal in cohesive soils.

An indication of the effectiveness of the treatment is the quantity of backfill material used. Other control procedures are

available, such as load or penetration tests.

5.5 Working Platform and Load Transfer Platform

Working Platform will be provided by main contractor, safe and stable for work. WPL shall be above ground water level: min.

1.5 m for the wet method.

Marjan Field Development Downstream Pipelines (Package 16), KSA

After installing of the stone columns, minimum of top 50 cm will be cut from working platform level, filled with engineering

fill and compacted min.50 cm which should be compacted by roller with two layers, all by main contractor. On top of that, a

Load Transfer Platform (LTP), designed by others, is placed up to foundation level, constructed in layers by suitable engineering

fill material compacted up to 95% MDD before placing foundation (by main contractor).
