LEARNING TASK
The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood, and blood vessels that carry blood to every
body part. We discussed how the heart works like the engine for our body pumping blood
constantly to keep our organs functioning.
Objective:
Describe blood flow through the heart by building a functioning heart model.
Materials:
3 x Pop bottles (710 mL) with caps and labels removed.
4 x Bendy straws
3 Cups of water
Red food coloring
Tape
Scissors
Disposable cups
Procedures:
1. Prepare all your materials.
2. Drill or make two holes (the same size) on the cap of one bottle, just enough for the straw
to slide through.
3. In the second cap, drill one hole that is also straw sized and another smaller hole.
4. Mix the water and red food coloring in a disposable cup to create your “red blood.”
5. Take two straws, stretch and bend them to create a 90-degree angle. Slide one straw into
the other straw, then tape them together. Repeat it using the second set of straws.
6. Place the three bottles on the table.
7. Fill the first two with the solution for about 80% full. Leave the third bottle empty.
8. On the first bottle, place the cap with one straw hole and one small hole. On the middle
bottle, put the cap with two straw holes. Leave the third bottle without a cap.
9. Carefully slide the straws through the bottle caps. Tape around the straw bases on the
middle bottle to make an airtight seal with the bottle cap.
10. To make your model work, squeeze the middle bottle only. Start by pinching the straw
between the first bottle and the middle bottle. Squeeze the middle bottle and watch your
“blood” squirt out into the empty bottle.

11. Repeat squeezing to pump blood from the first bottle into the middle bottle and then out to
the empty bottle.
12. Write your observations on your activity by answering the post-laboratory questions.
