Numerical 1
Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient of heat
transfer between water and oil if the water flows through a
copper tube of 180 mm inside diameter and 15 mm thick
while the oil flows through the annulus formed by this pipe
and an outer concentric pipe. The thermal conductivity of
the tube wall is 349 W/mK and the fouling factors on the
oil and water side are 0.00086 and 0.000344 respectively.
The oil and water side heat transfer coefficients can be
taken as 1280 and 4650 W/m2K respectively.

A horizontal steel pipe of 5.25 cm I.D and 6.03 cm O.D is
exposed to atmospheric air at 20oC. Hot water at 98oC
flows through this pipe with a velocity of 15 m per minute.
Taking the following data, calculate the overall heat
transfer coefficient, based on outer area of the pipe.
k for steel = 54 W/mK.
hi = 1961 W/m2K.
ho = 7.91 W/m2K

inside and outside the tube are 2270 and 2840 W/m2K,
respectively, and the unit fouling resistances at inside and
outside surfaces are Rfi = Rfo = 8.8 x 10-3 m2K/W.

Saturated steam at 1200C is condensing on the outer surface of a single

pass heat exchanger. The heat transfer coefficient is U0 = 1800 W/m2K.
Determine the surface area of heat exchanger capable of heating 1000
kg/h of water from 200C to 900C. Also compute the rate of
condensation of steam. Take hfg =2200 kJ/kg.

A double-pipe counter flow heat exchanger transfers heat between two

water streams. If 19 kg/s of water is heated in the tubes from 10 to 400 C
with 25 kg/s of inlet water on the shell side at 460 C, then what are the
effectiveness and LMTD of the heat exchanger? The specific heat of
water is 4.18 kJ/kg K.
