�Police brutality� that is human rights violations by the police. Though the
statement sounds conflicting and painful, in fact , this is happening around the
world for many reasons.

Amnesty internatoinal defines Police brutality as

" beatings, racial abuse, unlawful killings, torture, or indiscriminate actions


during protests by Police"
The world population review says, on an average 140 people per 10 million were
killed by police brutality in 2022.
Eventhough south korea does witness much of violent protests & police brutality in
recent times, there were some incidents in 2008 & 2015, when Amnesty
International�s investigation reported that:

� Police used excessive force such as water cannons and fire extinguishers;
� Some detainees were subjected to cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or
punishment,

On 25 May 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year old Black man, died after a police officer
in US kept his knee on his neck for nearly 10 minutes.

This horrific killing sparked widespread protests across the USA and beyond.

In South Korea, Black Lives Matter rallies were held peacfully & an estimated
crowd of some 100 people participated in the BLM rally in South Korea's capital of
Seoul

The UN Basic Principles on the Use of Force is the key international tool to deals
with police use of force .

The most important thing we must remember is that; it is our utmost obligation
including our police force, to respect and protect the right to life.
