Ultimately, the role of civil society in global governance needs to be assessed in terms of

its impact. Particularly within this impact dimension, lies the ability to promote democratic
accountability of global government. Over the last few decades, civil society activities appear to
have made several important contributions to increasing accountability in global governance.
Civil society organizations have been successful in influencing policymakers by giving a voice
to the voiceless, and have also successfully advocated for global government agencies to
recognize the current levels of transparency, consultation, external evaluation, efficiency and
honesty, higher than the last two decades. All this was made possible thanks to civil
mobilization. In addition, civil society organizations have significant influence on world public
opinion, global problem formation, influence on advisory processes and on innovative policy
measures / instruments. (Marchetti, 2010)

I will try to analyze the Case study IV: Civil Society and Human Rights by using the Black
Lives Matter movement as an example.

Hundreds of Black Lives Matter protesting police brutality and state violence have
occurred in American cities since 2013. The BLM movement has reached its climax in 2020
because of George Floyd's death due to police actions that are considered racist. BLM activists
took to the streets to protest the racist behavior of the police in the US and express their support
for George Floyd. Hundreds of Black Lives Matter protesting police brutality and state violence

The Internet era has also opened up new ways and platforms for civil society to mobilize.
It has enabled a new kind of strategy, swift and expansive, based on the idea that mobilizing
enough people at key moments will drive progressive change. We have seen the rise of new
tactics (on-line petitions, viral videos, Twitter storms) and also new advocacy organizations such
as Black Lives Matter. In fact, a new type of people-powered and digitally-facilitated civil
society organization has spread worldwide.

In France, protests focused on the removal of the statue of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, who
served as King Louis XIV's finance minister. Colbert wrote the infamous "black code" which
established guidelines for the treatment of black slaves in the French colonies. In Belgium, the
terrible memory of the brutality of King Leopold II against the Congolese resurfaced after
Floyd's death. Belgium had benefited greatly from its invasion of the Congo. However, this
success came at the expense of forced reconnaissance and a widespread genocide campaign.
(Shaw & Kidwai, 2020)

(Binning, 2019) stated that BLM has inspired the creation and support for sustainable
development of organizations working for national and transnational social and racial justice
around the world. The BLM, despite its imperfections, is the "yellow brick street of social
justice" that is helping to build the path that political activist Angela Davis conceived as the
"intersection of the movement" or as a union of struggles to strengthen every struggle against
oppression.
