Assignment/ Activity No. 1
Last Date of Submission October 25, 2021
Submission format Hardcopy
Marks 20

Objective: The objective of this assignment is to assess CO1 and CO2.

CO1 Define and describe fluid mechanics fundamentals.

CO2 Describe different methods of measurement of fluid pressure and evaluate the
hydrostatic forces and center of pressure of planar and curved submerged surfaces

Activity Description
Refer your text book and reference books and submit the answer to the following questions.
No Questions COs Marks
1 3.2m3 of a certain oil weighs 27.5kN. Calculate the specific weight, mass CO 1 3
density, specific volume and specific gravity with respect to water. If
kinematic viscosity of the oil is 7 x 10-3 stokes, what would be its dynamic
viscosity in centipoise?
2 A piston 796mm diameter and 200mm long, works in a cylinder of 800mm CO 1 3
diameter. If the annular space is filled with a lubricating oil of viscosity 5cp,
calculate the speed of descent of the piston in a vertical position. The weight
of piston and axial load is 9.8N.
3 A U-tube differential manometer containing mercury is connected on one CO 2 3
side to pipe A containing carbon tetrachloride having specific gravity of 1.6
under a pressure of 120kPa and on the other side to pipe B containing oil of
specific gravity 0.8 under a pressure of 200kPa. The pipe A lies 2.5m above
pipe B and the mercury level in the limb connecting to pipe A lies 4 m
below the pipe A. Determine the difference in the levels of mercury in the
two limbs of the manometer. Take specific weight of water as 9.81kN/m3.
4 A simple U-tube manometer containing mercury is connected to a pipe in CO 2 3

which a fluid of sp. gr. 0.8 and having vacuum pressure is flowing. The other
end of the manometer is open to the atmosphere. Find the vacuum pressure
in the pipe, if the difference of mercury levels in the two limbs is 40cm and
the centre of the pipe is 15cm above the level of mercury in the left limb.
5 The pressure at the centre of a pipe of diameter 3m is 29.43 N/cm 2. The pipe CO 2 3
contains oil of sp.gr. 0.87 and is fitted with a gate valve. Find the force
exerted by the oil on the gate and position of centre of pressure.
6. What is meant by viscosity of a liquid, how does it manifest and in what CO 1 2.5
units it is measured? Does the viscosity of liquids and gases increase or
decrease with increase in temperature? Suggest reasons for the difference in
behavior, if any.
7. Define the terms Atmospheric pressure, Gauge pressure, Vacuum pressure CO 2 2.5
and Absolute pressure. Indicate their relative positions on a chart.
