Identify the representative text and authors in North America and Africa

What is world literature?


World literature is the totality of all national literatures. The formation of
literature in different countries happened not at the same time. World
literature is the cultural heritage of all humanity. It is essential to study
world literature as it helps us understand the life of different people from
all over the world, forms our world-outlook and acquaints us with the
masterpieces of literature.

NORTH AMERICA
JONATHAN SAFRAN FOER
Jonathan Safran Foer was born February 21, 1977 is an American novelist. He
is known for his novels Everything Is Illuminated (2002), Extremely Loud &
Incredibly Close (2005), Here I Am (2016), and for his nonfiction works
Eating Animals (2009) and We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins
at Breakfast (2019). He teaches creative writing at New York University

SARA GRUEN

• Sara Gruen has dual citizenship. She is Canadian by birth and a naturalized
citizen of the United States.
• She studied English Literature at Carleton University, Ottawa.

MARGARET ATWOOD
Margaret Atwood, in full Margaret Eleanor Atwood, (born November 18,
1939, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Canadian writer best known for her prose
fiction and for her feminist perspective. Margaret is best known for The
Handmaid's Tale (1985), a dystopian novel set in New England in the near
future, which posits a Christian fundamentalist theocratic regime in
the former U.S. that arose as a response to a fertility crisis.

VALERIA LUISELLI
Valeria Luiselli was born in Mexico City and grew up in South Korea, South Africa
and India. An acclaimed writer of both fiction and nonfiction, she is the author of
Sidewalks, Faces in the Crowd, The Story of My Teeth, Tell Me How It Ends: An
Essay in Forty Questions and Lost Children Archive.

She is the recipient of a 2019 MacArthur Fellowship and the winner of DUBLIN
Literary Award, two Los Angeles Times Book Prizes, The Carnegie Medal, an
American Book Award, and has been nominated for the National Book Critics
Circle Award, the Kirkus Prize, and the Booker Prize.

CARMEN BOULLOSA
Carmen Boullosa (Mexico City, 1954) is the author of nineteen novels (with Deep
Vellum: Texas: The Great Theft, translated by Samantha Schnee; Before,
translated by Peter Bush; and Heavens on Earth, translated by Shelby Vincent),
poetry collections (Hatchet, translated by Lawrence Schimmel), plays, and essays

She has collaborated with visual artists and created artist’s books for her own
work (printed at her press, Taller Tres Sirenas, in the eighties). Her work has been
exhibited at the Museo de Arte Moderno, the Museo Carrillo Gil, and the
Seminario de Cultura Mexicana in Mexico, the Sala Ruiz Picasso in Madrid, and
elsewhere.

Boullosa was awarded the Rosalia de Castro Award by PEN Galicia in 2018, Café
Gijón Award in 2008, and the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize in 1989. She is also the
recipient of a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation.

BEN OKRI
Ben Okri, (born March 15, 1959, Minna, Nigeria), Nigerian novelist, short-story
writer, and poet who used magic realism to convey the social and political chaos
in the country of his birth.

His first novels, Flowers and Shadows (1980) and The Landscapes Within (1981),
employ surrealistic images to depict the corruption and lunacy of a politically
scarred country. The short-story collections Incidents at the Shrine (1986) and
Stars of the New Curfew (1988) portray the essential link in Nigerian culture
between the physical world and the world of the spirits.

Okri won the Booker Prize for his novel The Famished Road (1991), the story of
Azaro, an abiku (“spirit child”), and his quest for identity. The novels Songs of
Enchantment (1993) and Infinite Riches (1998) continue the themes of The
Famished Road, relating stories of dangerous quests and the struggle for
equanimity in an unstable land.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AMERICAN AND AFRICAN LITERATURE


American( Canadian) and African literature is far from each other. We identify five
dominant themes of the expression of nature in Canadian literature: (1) humans
as a part of nature; (2) a bounty of natural resources; (3) fear of an adversarial
wilderness; (4) improvement of nature; (5) regret of environmental damage and
perhaps despair of the future. On the other hand american literature has also

Absence of Happy Love or Fulfilling Marriage; and (5) Anti-machine.

Furthermore, the common themes of african include the clash between past and
present, tradition and modernity, self and community, as well as politics and
development.
