Exploring Sound worksheet (U5, LO1: AC 1.1)

SOUND. You will be required to answer a series of questions in order to pass. They are in RED on this document. You can answer
these questions using examples from TV, film, animation or gaming but will need to provide links so make sure you can do this
when choosing them!

Task 1/6: Diegesis and Non-Diegesis

You are required to give…

 An existing definition of both diegetic and non-diegetic sound. Say where you got them from.
 Rewrite each definition in your own words to show you understand what they mean.
 Provide an example of each of these. This could be a Youtube link (timecoded please!) with a very short description.

From my understanding

film, it is used to help show
what is happening and create
excitement or other emotion.

that it isn’t in the film, it is
added sound for example voice
over or additional music, this
also applies to CGI and graphic
effects.

Catina scene
An example of diegetic sound in a film
would be the “Catina scene from Star
wars a New Hope”. Throughout the
scene the music gets more and more
quiet showing intensity and clarity.
Kylo Ren stops blaster bolt
An example of non-diegetic sound in a
film would be Star wars episode 7, the
force awakens, the sound effects of the
blaster bolt being stopped are so
awesome to me and have such a fierce
and ferocious roar and snarl really
emphasising the sith powers.
