Unit 1 – Intro to Chemistry

Learning Overview
Chemistry is the study of matter. Scientific methods, including applications of laboratory skills
and safety, are employed to explain origins, distributions and characteristics of matter.

Essential Questions
What is matter? How did it originate? How does it change? How is it classified?

How is the scientific method used to find answers to these questions?

Reading Assignments
Complete the assigned reading for each day prior to coming to class. Complete assignments include the
following:
1. An outline or graphic organizer with questions or keywords and notes about the section read.
2. If sample calculations are presented in the reading, provide worked out practice problems.
3. A summary of the reading assignment is included at the end of the outline.
At the beginning of each class you will have a quiz that covers the reading assignment. You may use
your reading notes for this quiz.
