Intercultural
Communication
ACTIVITY 1

Discuss Intercultural Communication

Communication is essential no matter where you are on the world. However,
communicating across cultures can be difficult. I don't just mean language barriers,
though those can be a problem. What I mean is that different cultures have very
different ways of communicating. Some cultures are informal, some cultures use a
series of ritual greetings before having a conversation, and some cultures consider it
rude to arrive on time to a meeting. For one thing, if you don't understand their
communication styles, you may offend each of them.
People from one culture strive to understand the information communicated to them by
people from different civilizations. Intercultural communication focuses on the
numerous communication and interactional settings that individuals from diverse ethnic
origins and groups face, as well as how they engage with people from other cultures.
Because culture has a huge influence on how individuals do business, cultural
influences are crucial for success in an international environment. With this, people of
one culture try to know the information conveyed to them by other cultures.
For example, in a hotel establishment, the hoteliers assess their customers’
requirements, tastes, and provide services accordingly. The customers also inform the
hoteliers of their needs.

preferences, skills, and limitations, as well as how they can assist or limit us
while talking across cultures. Intercultural communication is a great benefit both
personally and educationally when you travel to new nations and develop a
better understanding of many different cultures and their unique practices,
values, and beliefs. Good intercultural communication fundamentally requires
intercultural awareness, an understanding that different cultures have different
standards and norms.

For instance, whenever you travel to another country. It is critical to be

knowledgeable about the culture, beliefs, and traditions of the country you are
visiting. This is carried out to prevent embarrassment and miscommunication
among the people. It is essential to learn about cultural differences and adapt to
them while visiting in order to respect their traditions.

contribute to our global
competitiveness?

ZGE 1105 - PURPOSIVE COMMUNCATIONS

Intercultural communication today means gaining a competitive advantage. Why?

We are all aware that business today is extremely competitive and rapidly
changing. People must get it right, and they must get it right the first time.
Intercultural communication is important because it influences both our ability to
communicate effectively within a culture and how we are perceived.

Finally, the need for intercultural communication skills is obvious: we all work in
an interconnected global economy, and it is critical to cultivate positive
relationships with people from other cultures. This leads to better business.

Miscommunication can occur due to a lack of understanding of another culture.

In the worst-case scenario, such errors may confuse or even offend the people
with whom we wish to communicate if we are unfamiliar with their culture.

Cue, a Colgate-Palmolive toothpaste, was advertised in France before anyone

realized it was also the name of a widely circulated pornographic book about oral
sex.
Naming a product is the most basic form of communication. Intercultural
communication has far-reaching implications for global business. A better
understanding of intercultural communication differences, manners, etiquette,
language, and communication styles leads to a much more positive interaction.
