LIGA PARA SA BRIGADA

A DAY LEAGUE FOR A CAUSE

By Mary Wennie L. Anastacio

“Nag enjoy ka na, nakatulong ka pa.” One of the players uttered.

Volleyball is a game of endurance and teamwork, growing up in playing the sport can make you learn a
lot not only the techniques but it is also one way of extending your hands and heart to help those who
are in need.

For most people, volleyball is just another sport that they see at School or on TV. For others it is their
whole world and it’s what they live and breathe, investing time and money to support their dream. But
this time, it is quite different – a volleyball league for a cause. Marcelo I. Cabrera Vocational High School
conducted a two-day volleyball league (Male and Female Category) as part of Brigada Eskwela
generating project, headed by Ilerh Dave C. Miňano, BE chairman, together with his partner Mr. James
Benex M. Bayle.

Before the actual game begun, they prepared necessary equipment and gears that would be used and
some of these are balls, antenna, net, score sheets, whistles, platform and flag. They also coordinated
with Barangay San Aquilino covered court for the venue of the game. They cleaned the area and
removed the obstacles might interfere the game. To make it more interesting, the coordinators did a
great job to look for sponsors for their prizes and Paulo Calara, Sta. Brigida SK Chairman, did not fail
them. So, they invited other schools and some group of volleyball players from Bansud, Oriental
Mindoro down to San Jose, Occidental Mindoro. There were six teams registered in female category and
8 teams were registered in male category. All expenses were deducted from the collected registration
fees such as snacks and consolation prizes. Then, the remaining funds from the game were spent for the
construction and beautification of landscape around the MICVHS flag pole, solar lights and other
materials used in mural painting as projects for Brigada Eskwela 2022.

The Female category was held on August 6, 2022 and it went smoothly. Before the game started, both
teams were also given enough time to perform their warm-up routines and each were given the
opportunity to use and inspect the ball and the court. All teams were dressed up according to their style
and preference. At the end of the game, Team Konsi was declared as champion and Lady Spikers as 1 st
runner up. Cool Spikers, Brand X Vicars, Team Mucha Smashers and Ganda Lang Spikers participated
happily in the game.

The Male category was an extraordinary one. The venue was not available anymore on the second day
of the game, August 7, 2022 due to a heavy rain. Sir Ilerh, the game coordinator, started to look for
another venue in Victoria, Roxas but still, it wasn’t available. The game was interrupted for hours and
they felt so exhausted. They planned to stop the game and gave up until Eric De Castro, Paclasan
Barangay Captain accepted their request to continue the game. These players are definitely one of the
Brigada Heroes. Despite of all the time delays, commotions and dramas; they remained upright to
achieve something different for the sake of school wellbeing. San Mariano Smashers was declared as
champion and Marcelo Aces as 1st runner up. And other teams who participated were Herons, The
Legendary, Villa Pag Asa National High School, All Star Balugo, Queen Smashers and Team Virgins. The
game ended up at 9:30 pm. Even though the game finished late, yet it was so much fulfilling!
