Engineering Controls Engineering controls modify the equipment or the work area to make it quieter. Examples of engineering controls are: substituting existing equipment with quieter equipment; retro-fitting existing equipment with damping materials, mufflers, or enclosures; erecting barriers; and ‘maintenance. Administrative Controls ‘These are management decisions on work activities, work rotation and work load to reduce workers’ exposure to high noise levels. Typical management decisions that reduce worker exposures to noise are: moving workers away from the noise source; restricting access to arcas; rotating workers performing noisy tasks; and shutting down noisy equipment when not needed. Personal Protective Equipment Earplugs are the typical PPE given to workers to reduce their exposure to noise. Earplugs/ ear muffs are the control of last resort and should only be provided when other means of noise controls are infeasible. By dewatering the ground intemally ahead of the shaft or advancing tunnel face. e. By excluding it using ground treatment, compressed air or by use of a closed-face tunneling machine and sealed lining. 4. By allowing it to flow in under control. ‘The water table will be lowered by the drainage of water extemal to the shaft or tunnel. This can be achieved by deep wells, well-pointing from the surface or by drainage sumps in a shaft or pit, possibly combined with the drainage headings. A piled cut —off, toed into an impermeable layer can be constructed if there is a well defined local source of water. 26.2 Oxygen Deficiency All persons underground will have immediate access to a self- rescuer which provides the user with a supply of oxygen for at least 20 min while walking. Self rescuers will normally be worn y persons underground on a belt, but will be stored in racks that are immediately accessible for use in an emergency. 263° Ventilation ‘The object of ventilation in a tunnel or shaft is to provide fresh air or to extract pollutants, in order to achieve an acceptable environment. The quantity of fresh air supplied is usually determined not by breathing requirements but by the need to dilute pollutants and to provide cooling. Fresh air will be distributed to all working areas. A fully controllable balanced ventilation system is designed in advance, with the capacity and flexibility to allow growth and adaptation as excavation progresses. ‘A minimum fresh air supply of 0.3 m'/min per person will normally be sufficient to maintain a respirable atmosphere. Additional ventilation will be provided where construction is to be used, to mitigate the effects of exhaust emissions and /or heat generated. An additional supply of at least 3.0 m’/min per working kilowatt is recommended for machines with stringent emission controls. Recommended minimum air velocities in the tunnel should be 0.5 m/s to contain dust, and 2.0 m/s to prevent layering of methane. 32 (AFcons) SITE ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT [AFCONS) PLAN ba 043 Construction OF) 8.124 Km Elevated Viaduets And 8 Stations From Ch. 17343.443m To 25467.443m, Ii) 5.420 Km Elevated Viaducts And 3 Stations From Gnlu To Gift City And Iii) 0.815 Km Elevated Viaducts ‘And Additional Platform At Koteswar Road Station For Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-li From Motera Stadium To Mahatma Mandir And Gnlu To Gift City (Excl. The tunnel atmosphere will be considered as oxygen-deficient when the concentration of oxygen falls below 19%. ‘The important physical aspects of air quality are temperature, humidity and velocity. The air as supplied will be as cool and dry as is reasonably practicable, as during its passage into the tunnel its temperature tents to become that of the tunnel walls and take up moisture in the tunnel. 15°C to 20°C can contribute greatly to comfort and efficiency. 264 Dangerous Gases ‘The monitoring and control of dangerous gases in a tunnel atmosphere is difficult because the concentration rarely remain constant through the working day. Its spread will be controlled by ‘methods such as water spraying and extraction ventilation. Dust will be generated directly at the tunnel face by the processes of drilling or breaking up of rock, even when wet. When drilling and blasting are employed, dust production is intermittent. High pressure water jets at the point of rock fracture will be used to suppress dust. Cutter heads in tunneling machines should be wetted with high — pressure jets of water at predetermined rates. To prevent dust particles migrating back against the main body of air flow, the air velocity in any section of tunnel should be not less than 0.5 m/s, 26.6 Noise The effects of noise are intensified in tunnels because the confined space increases the reverberant sound field that can be developed by noisy plant and equipment, tools or processes. To control this personal hearing protection will be supplied as an interim means of reducing the level of noise. Major sources which should be considered include machines, tools, ventilation equipment and air leaks. Noise emission at source is reduced by silencing or by the use of acoustic screening. Care will be taken since noise from tunneling machines is arising from several sources. 27.0 EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN (ERP): In case of the environmental emergencies like Fire Spillage/leakage of raw material Leakage/short circuit of any electrical supply ‘Major engineering failures such as, a.
