Student Conceptions and Planning

Math Standard: Standard: 1.0a.5 Relate counting to addition and subtraction
(e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).

I focused on first grade and teaching addition and subtraction by counting.

Implementation
We started by asking What do you notice? What do you wonder? MAny
students mentioned the different colors of butterflies. One student
wondered if there were more yellow butterflies than red or blue. After we
asked how many butterflies there are and how do you know? Most people
said they added the different colors together. Some students said they
counted.

Changes for Next Time

I like the idea of the two questions I had. I would definitely ask what
you notice? What do you wonder? Again. I would include how many
butterflies are there? How do you know? Again as well. Ensure I added in
time for students to use their jamboards and work out their thinking on the
jamboard to make it easier to add up to how many butterflies there are. I
would probably add in how many of each color there is to help them think
about subitizing and then have them add up each amount from the different
colors.
