Area(A) = length x width
A= (12 + 9) x 3
A= 36y + 27

YOUR VERSION of the mathematical task

From the given illustration, find the area of the bigger rectangle if 2 m was added to both sides of the smaller
rectangle to form the shaded region.

Specific reasoning skills that this mathematical task requires

Analyzing and solving,

Solutions to the mathematical task, and reasons

1. What figures do you see in the illustration?
2. How will you find the area of the big rectangle?
3. Determine the area of the unshaded (small) rectangle.
4. Subtract the area, of the unshaded (small) rectangle from the big rectangle.

Solution:
Since the shaded portion has a width of 2 m, the length and width of the unshaded
portion will be added by 4 to get the length and width of the big rectangle.
A=lxw
= = (12y + 9) m + 4 m x 3 m + 4 m
= (12y + 13m) ( 7m)
= (84y + 91) m2

Area of the unshaded rectangle:

A=lxw
= (12y + 9) m (3 m)
= (36 y + 27 ) m2

Area of the shaded portion = Area of the big rectangle - Area of the unshaded portion
= (84y + 91) m2 - (36 y + 27 ) m2
Area of the shaded portion = (48 y + 64) m2

Description of how the mathematical task will be used in the lesson: (e.g. questions to ask students to elicit or
prompt reasoning, questions to ask to highlight the main concept involved in this task, etc.)

1. What figures do you see in the illustration?

2. What given in the illustration and what are asked?
3. How will you solve for the area of rectangles?
4. Describe the formula in determining the area of the rectangle.
5. If the shaded portion is 2 m wide, what will be the length and width of the big rectangle?
6. How will you determine the shaded portion of the big rectangle?
