Code of Ethics of Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is a profession that affects all aspect of our lives. Civil engineers
are the one responsible in building the infrastructures in our society, and so, their
decisions affect most if not all people in society. Civil engineers breaking their code of
ethics may result in the endangerment of thousands of people. Thus, it is with outmost
important that the code of ethics does not contain any loophole or inconsistency.
Reading the fundamental canons of Civil engineering, I realized that there is no
safeguard against building anti-homeless structures. Anti-homeless structures are
structures that prevent homeless people from using them, things like curve benches or
spiked underpass (see pictures below) prevents homeless people from sleeping on them.
Although it is said that Civil engineers must uphold safety, health, and welfare in the code
of ethics, building said infrastructures does not necessarily violates it.
Therefore, I propose adding a statement that prevents building anti-homeless
structures as I believe they are inhuman. I think that civil engineers and architects’
creations must not discriminate and be hostile to anyone, not just people but also animals.
It is paramount that any structures that civil engineers create must not only benefit a
selected kind of people but all people.
