INTERVIEW REPORT/ESSAY

Introduction
The name of the interviewee is Maharaj Singh, he is currently employed as a driver at our home. He
originally resided in a village called SONAI in MATHURA, he is currently 28 years old. He is married and
has 1 child who live separately in their hometown with his parents. He works from 8 am to 8 pm and
resides in the servant quarters located in our house. He knows how to read and write and has a good
hold on his mother tongue i.e., Hindi. He claims to have studied up to secondary school. He has a small
mobile phone that he uses to contact his family.
Questionnaire
We employed our driver on the 31st of October 2021, he has completed secondary schooling in his
hometown. Before this he worked in a private taxi service, he has a work experience of about 5 years he
usually used to drive on highways at long stretches of time in his previous job sometimes up to 20 hours
at a stretch. He wouldn’t be able to meet his wife for about a month and sometimes even two
months .Upon asking whether he was happy with this new job or not he responded that this job was
about 10 times better than his previous one. He explained why so, apparently the working hours were
long the wages were low since there was no formal employment or anything and he wouldn’t get his
salary until about 3-4 months later. Due to this he faced trouble acquiring basic necessities like food. He
also wouldn’t be able to pay rent on time due to this he was threatened to be evicted multiple time’s,
most of the cars he drove weren’t maintained that well and even a single scratch on the car would come
out of his paycheck

He said that in a timeframe of 5 years he could only visit his hometown twice and that too for a very
short period since he wouldn’t get any days off at all. And all of this Was before he pandemic but after
the pandemic it just got worse. He was basically unemployed for about 6 months due to the lockdown
with everything shut down and the curfew. But they managed to work things out for a couple of months
because they had some savings but after that they just had to borrow money from various people .

Upon asking him why he left his family in the village he responded by saying that the living conditions in
Delhi weren’t ideal, and that he preferred his family to stay in the village with much cleaner fresher air
water and absence of adulterated and processed food that he finds in the city.

Upon enquiring about his family, he said that they were doing well since the lockdown was lifted. He
mentioned that he had 1 child who was about a year old and that they were planning on educating him
here in the city as he wanted his son to rise the ranks and become successful.

Then I asked him what he aspired to become when he was young, he responded by saying that he
wanted to be an engineer but couldn’t do so due to some family problems and financial burdens. On
further discussion I asked him whether he believed in the GOVERNMENT or not, he said that the
government is effective, by stating that there has been development in his village he said that the govt.
has erected multiple mobile towers have developed road infrastructure ,dams etc. in the village .he
ended by saying that there has been “SIGNIFICANT CHANGE’.

Conclusion
Motivation and Hopes for the Future : When I asked him as to what keeps him motivated, he replied
by saying that he one day hopes to buy a house on his own, in the city for his father as a sign of
appreciation and gratitude for whatever his father has done for him, raised him, educated him, made
him capable enough of earning a living. He also hopes to see his son be a successful businessman
