Procedure of Capsule Endoscopy in Custodian GI Team

Endoscopy Centre Approver COS (Med)

1. Objective
To provide a procedure guideline on performing Capsule Endoscopy in Endoscopy Centre

2. Procedure of Capsule Endoscopy (CE) in CEU

Check receipt
Install data recorder of CE in Endoscopy Centre
Ingest CE with 80 mg simethicone after patient is transported to Endoscopy Centre

Record time of ingestion in case note

Allow patient to drink water until CE has passed to the stomach

Give iv metoclopramide 10 mg unless contraindicated
Advise patient to mobilise

Check whether CE has reached the small bowel on real-time recorder at least
hourly

Transfer patient to ward if CE has reached the small Inform GI team if CE is still located in the esophagus or
bowel & write down stomach 2 hours after ingestion for considering
1. time of ingestion of CE OGD-guided placement of CE to the duodenum.
2. give l litre Klean Prep in ward
3. resume clear fluid diet 3 hours after ingestion of CE
4. resume a light meal 4 hours after ingestion of CE

Trace data recorder from ward and transfer data to work station next morning

If the colon is not entered during the acquisition time, arrange an abdominal
radiograph 2 weeks after CE ingestion to exclude capsule retention
