SUBJECT: FLUID MECHANICS-1 (ME-2302)
ASSIGNMENT NO. 2
(Due Date: 22nd December, 2022)
Question No.1
Water flows from the pipe shown in Figure 1 as a free jet and strikes a
circular flat plate. The flow geometry shown is axisymmetrical.
Determine the flowrate and the manometer reading, H.

Question No.2
Consider the problem shown in Figure 2, if 𝑉1 = 1.7𝑓𝑡/𝑠 and losses
are neglected, what should the manometer reading 𝒉 (in ft) be ? Here,
the density of water is 1.94 𝑠𝑙𝑢𝑔𝑠/𝑓𝑡 3 and specific gravity of
mercury is 13.6.

Question No.3 (CLO2, PLO2)

JP-4 fuel (𝑆𝐺 = 0.77) flows through the Venturi-meter as
shown in Figure 4 with a velocity of 15 ft/s in the 6-in. pipe.
If viscous effects are negligible, determine the elevation, h, of
the fuel in the open tube connected to the throat of the
Venturi-meter.

Question No.4 (CLO2, PLO2)

The vent on the tank shown in Figure 4 is closed and the tank
pressurized to increase the flowrate. What pressure, 𝑃1 is needed to
produce twice the flowrate of that when the vent is open?

Question No.5
What diameter orifice hole, 𝑑, is needed if under ideal
conditions the flowrate through the orifice meter of
Figure 5 is to be 0.1 𝑓𝑡 3 /𝑠 of seawater with 𝑃1 − 𝑃2 =
3 𝑙𝑏/𝑖𝑛2 . The contraction coefficient is assumed to be
0.63.

Question No.6 (CLO1, PLO2)

Gate AB shown in Figure 6 is a homogeneous mass of 180 kg, 1.2 m

wide into the paper, hinged at A, and resting on a smooth bottom at B.
All fluids are at 20°C. For what water depth ‘h’ will the force at point
B be zero?

Question No.7 (CLO1, PLO2)

A 4-m-long curved gate is located in the side of a reservoir containing

water as shown in Figure 7. Determine the magnitude of the horizontal
and vertical components of the force of the water on the gate. Will this
force pass through point A? Explain.

Question No.8
A 3-m-wide, 8-m-high rectangular gate is
located at the end of a rectangular passage
that is connected to a large open tank filled
with water as shown in Figure 8. The gate is
hinged at its bottom and held closed by a
horizontal force, 𝐹𝐻, located at the center of
the gate. The maximum value for 𝐹𝐻 is 3500
kN. Determine the maximum water depth, h,
above the center of the gate that can exist
without the gate opening.
