Chapter-4
Industrial pollution and degradation of environment
I. Short answer type questions.
1. What do you mean by the term ‘pollution’ and ‘industrial pollution’?
A) Pollution refers to harmful substances released into the environment.
Industrial pollution is the pollution which can be directly linked with
industry, in contrast to other sources of pollution. Industrial pollution
hurts the environment in many ways and it has negative impact on human
lives and health.
2. Write four technological strategies to reduce air pollution.
A) The four technological strategies to reduce air pollution are
 Control technology
 Catalytic reduction
 New manufacturing processes
 Control of gaseous contaminants
3. How radioactive pollution is caused?
A) X-ray radiations cause radioactive pollution which is a special form of
physical pollution of air, water, and soil due to the presence of radioactive
materials.
4. Differentiate between absorption and adsorption techniques to control
gaseous contaminants.
Absorption: This is the process in which effluent gases are passed through
absorbers that remove one or more of the pollutants in the gas stream.

Adsorption: In this process, the effluent gases are passed through absorbs,
which contain solids of porous structure.
5. What are the various techniques to control water pollution?
B) Chemical treatment and biological treatment are the techniques to control
water pollution.
6. What is eco friendly industrial development? Give examples.
Ans) Eco-friendly industrial development is one of the ways in which
industrial ecology contributes to the integration of economic growth and
environmental protection. Some of the examples of eco-friendly industrial
development are:
 Recycling dusters
 Green companies clusters
 Redevelopment of industrial parks
 New development of eco-friendly industrial parks
 Eco-friendly resource exchange networks

6) What is noise pollution?

A) Industries create a lot of unwanted sound which interfere with communication,
leisure and relaxation. This is known as noise pollution.
7. What are the various sources of air pollution? Explain any three.
A) There are numerous sources of air pollution. They are
 Air pollution due to motor vehicles
 Burning garbage
 Industrial waste
 Power plants
 Biomedical wastes
