Culture Plays An Important Role in Learning A Foreign Language
It is
impossible to learn a new language without tackling its culture. In addition
to grammatical issues, and vocabulary of the target language, learning a
foreign language should also include cultural aspects. We cannot achieve
good communication without properly using the target language in the
context of its culture when we learn a foreign language .
There are different problems and challenges that we may face in teaching
the foreign culture ,for example, students tend to transfer their cultural
knowledge in order to understand the context of target language. Also, they
have very limited opportunities to communicate and interact with individuals
from English speaking countries. So cultural differences can cause cultural
confusion and misunderstanding. As a result teachers need to gives the
students opportunities to make a comparison between their culture and
target language. This can help them better understanding a language also
affect the increase of interest and motivation to learn English.
Teachers should look for practical ways to integrate culture into their
language lessons. For examples :
1.Using authentic materials such as films, television shows, websites,
photographs, magazines, newspapers, travel brochures, and other printed
materials to engage and encourage the students in the discussion of
cultural issues.
2. Using proverbs to help students exploring the target culture
3. Using literary texts as sources for learning culture
4. Using films and television segment to provide students with an
opportunity to observe behaviors that are not obvious in texts.
