Geologic Time Scale SUMMATIVE EVALUATION!

We are now at the end of the unit, which means that you are going to
show what you have learned about rocks and the geological time scale
using the information below.

All of your information is going to go onto a GOOGLE SITE that you will
create!

7th/8th Grade Science Standards Being Assessed:

NGSS Practice 1- Asking questions and Defining Problems

*That require sufficient and appropriate empirical evidence to answer. (Shows your level
of understanding through the question you make about the Geological Time Scale.)

NGSS Practice 4 - Analysing and Interpreting Data

*Construct, analyze, and/or interpret graphical displays of data and/or large data sets to
identify linear and nonlinear relationships.
*Use graphical displays (e.g., maps, charts, graphs, and/or tables) of large data sets to
identify temporal and spatial relationships.
*Distinguish between causal and correlational relationships in data

*Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for phenomena.

NGSS Practice 7 - Engaging in Argument from Evidence

*Construct an explanation that includes qualitative or quantitative relationships between
variables that predict(s) and/or describe(s) phenomena.
*Construct an explanation using models or representations.
*Construct a scientific explanation based on valid and reliable evidence obtained from
sources (including the students’ own experiments) and the assumption that theories and
laws that describe the natural world operate today as they did in the past and will
continue to do so in the future.
*Apply scientific ideas, principles, and/or evidence to construct, revise and/or use an
explanation for real- world phenomena, examples, or events.

Reading Standards for Literacy in Science:

*Compare and contrast the information gained from experiments, simulations, video, or
multimedia sources with that gained from reading a text on the same topic.

Writing Standards for Literacy in Science:

*Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style
are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
Geologic time scale problem: Students will create an informational
picture book of each era of geologic history. The book will include
information about the diversity of life & changes in the land and
atmosphere.

START HERE!
BACKGROUND INFORMATION/RESEARCH ON THE GEOLOGICAL TIME SCALE:
Watch this YouTube video the Geological Time Scale:
Video here

Once you have completed the video, begin work on the worksheet.

What I expect for you to have completed by Friday:

Complete questions 1-17 in the worksheet. (This should be pages 1-6.) Here
Compose 3 different questions that you will seek to answer using your geological time scale (then
make a video on flipgrid.)
Complete your geological time scale (in paper format.)

*What materials will you need to build your time scale?

● Print off the sheets I assign to you (these will all be in google classroom for you to access.)
○ Geological time scale reference table
○ The Geological time scale
○ The Geological time scale images (to be cut out for the timeline.)
● Scissors (to cut out the pictures)
● Glue or tape (to tape/glue the pictures on the time scale.)

Once you are finished with the above information, you will be given approval (by me) to begin creating your
picture book of each area of geological history with the information you collected from your research. This
will be completed on a google site.

*ALL of the information for the geological picture book will be put onto a GOOGLE SITE. This is a FREE
website that you can create (and keep private).
*Your website will be divided into at least 4 pages:
-PAGE 1: Introduction and background information
-PAGE 2: Finished information
-PAGE 3: Analyzing and Interpreting Data
-PAGE 4: Overall Analysis and Conclusion

*You can be as creative as you like with your website! You can choose the theme, change the fonts, add
images or photos, add your own videos, etc.

*The assignment will be divided into 3 parts:

Part 1: Asking questions and Part 2: Analyzing and Interpreting Part 3: Overall Analysis and
defining problems Data Conclusions
