I. What is happening in the world today?

During the COVID-19 lockdown, global telecommunications traffic drastically increased. Due to
the pandemic, telecommunications businesses have become one of the most important industries
and are likely to remain so for the coming years.

Growing economy: Huge amounts of data will be used in the new generation of artificial
intelligence to forecast peak traffic, improve end-to-end service, and improve connection. There
are opportunities for telecommunication to use these technologies to automate infrastructure,
enhance network capabilities, and provide a seamless client experience. With the help of
algorithms, the integration of AI, machine learning, and process mining makes it possible to
foresee and anticipate problems before they negatively affect customers.

Demand: High-speed connectivity is more in demand than ever, and 5G is ready to satisfy these
demands. Among its many advantages for the network are lower connectivity costs, extremely
high speed, and the highly anticipated lower latency. The advantages provided by the WWW and
the method of network access will be the first changes of this fifth generation (World Wide
Wireless Web). A rich ecosystem of mobile applications, seamless broadband access, and cloud-
based services are all features of the mobile ecosystem for which the WWWW is created.

Data transmission speeds of up to 10 Gbps, or 100 times faster than 4G, are also promised by 5G
technology. A bright future and new perspectives are made possible by the new 5G connectivity.
The telecommunications industry will benefit greatly and significantly from the fifth generation
of mobile telephony. Transportation, healthcare, agriculture, and public services are just a few of
the services that it has practical uses.

Fiber Deployment: With 3 billion people using the internet worldwide, new technologies like
5G network, Fiber to the Home (FTTH), and Fiber to the Building (FTTB) have improved the
location of these network systems. Furthermore, when properly implemented, this technology
optimizes business operations and reduces costs across all industries. Fiber deployment is the key
to the digital development of communities and territories.

2
II. What does it mean for others?

5G is the 5th generation of mobile wireless communications technology and will account for
20% of global connections according to GSMA. Operators and carriers across the globe are
supporting the shift towards 5G with an expected investment of around $1.1 trillion in mobile
CAPEX between 2020 and 2025. This technology is set to change the way many businesses
operate as it allows for faster connectivity and low latency, and enhances bandwidth, and
connectivity speed. This impacts more than just connectivity as it paves the way for IoT and
edge computing which enables digitization, automation, and the remote monitoring and
management of business processes and operations. 5G networks will allow Telco to target
enterprises with 5 G-related applications specifically built for industries, for example,
telemedicine solutions for the healthcare sector.

Investments in 5G networks are not only an infrastructural expense, but they are also an
opportunity for all Telco to create new services for people and companies and gain maximum
market share.

• Smart Roads. This is a technological innovation plan for road safety that is based on the
use of special sensors positioned on crosswalks to inform passing cars that a pedestrian is
approaching. The project also plans to place units on vehicles and bicycles that will
provide reciprocal information to each via mobile devices (such as a smartwatch) or GPS
navigation systems to improve safety and avoid road accidents. All this, of course, is
possible thanks to 5G technology. By reducing latency times to a minimum, information
can be immediately exchanged between multiple devices simultaneously.
• Autonomous Driving: 5G will play a crucial role in the construction and operation of
smart cars and especially those with autonomous driving. Autonomous driving vehicles
will need to rely on the 5G network since it is the most efficient technology for
transferring large amounts of data quickly, constantly, and stably.
• B2B: The opportunity for telecoms is interesting, because they can provide companies
with a complete and organic service offer that includes 5G, the cloud, broadband, and IoT
systems implementation, thus carving out the key role of partners in the digital
transformation of a company. This kind of collaboration can happen in every sector: from

3
manufacturing to finance and banking, from retail to healthcare, and from agriculture to
energy and utilities. For the telco sector, 5G represents a significant driver to push B2B
activities, which certainly represents the most promising area in which to implement
these.

Zong 4G in Pakistan, has achieved a milestone by successfully conducting 5G trials in the

country. Zong 4G, has become the first Pakistani operator to make the country’s pioneering 5G
NSA call between Beijing and Islamabad in collaboration with Beijing Mobile. This is a turning
point for all other telecom companies to start transitioning towards 5G to capture a competitive
advantage.

III. What does it mean for us?

Opportunity for big growth: When UFONE entered the market, Mobilink and InstaOne
dominated. In a country like Pakistan where mobile phones were a status symbol at that time and
people didn't know about them, it was challenging to enter such a market. Ufone has changed
everything and offers extremely low mobile connection and calling rates that neither
MOBILINK nor InstaOne offered when they first entered the market. This is a significant growth
opportunity for Ufone. Ufone claimed to have the best network, clear sound, and lowest call
rates. They also offered customers simple tariffs without additional fees. Ufone gives its
customers many reasons to smile with a strong and distinctly humorous communication strategy
that has now become a hallmark of the brand across all advertising mediums. Ufone has an
opportunity to promote itself and become a market leader as it pioneers in the southern region of
Punjab.

Ufone 4G is committed to significantly expanding its female customer base as the Pakistani
company is at the forefront of promoting women empowerment in the country. Ufone 4G's
commitment to the GSMA aims to increase the participation of Pakistani women in the
mainstream socio-economic system by providing them with high-quality connectivity speed. In
addition, the company aims to help women use the Internet to explore opportunities for personal
and professional development and to close the gender gap in connectivity.

4
Ufone offers Pakistan’s largest GPRS & BlackBerry Roaming coverage available with more than
150 Live Operators across 105 countries. More recently, Ufone has become a focused and
intensive leader in VAS, constantly introducing innovative services, which have been the first of
their kind in the Pakistani cellular industry.

These all are big opportunities for Ufone and that was a gap that no other company was not
involved in that offerings that’s why Ufone invested more and more in advanced technology.

Strategy: From the beginning, Ufone’s strategy has been to change this situation and ensure that
all people use mobile phones as everyday business and personal communication tools. The
market changed dramatically as a result of this strategy; it has expanded five times in just two
years. Ufone's performance over the past two years has been exceptional as it has achieved all its
marketing and financial targets. Ufone’s strategy is to provide a high standard of service at the
lowest price rather than increase the subscriber base without capacity.

IV. What would have to happen first?

As the trends are changing rapidly towards technological innovations, Ufone also has to invest
heavily in R & D to be in sync with the changing trends and markets. As Tesla and other
innovative companies are looking for ways to provide free internet across the globe so Ufone as
a telecom company needs to look for opportunities to stay relevant and retain its market share.
Ufone can adopt the following strategies and steps:

• First, the company needs to introduce "UFONE KIOSK" so Ufone can admire its
customers. These will be ATM-like machines and Ufone customers will be able to use
the service to load balances on their mobile phones in the same way money is withdrawn
from ATMs. This area has not been tapped by other players.

• Ufone needs to invest and move towards trials of 5G which is the future of connectivity if
Ufone wants to stay ahead in the game. 5G will create immense opportunities for the
company and provide many areas to tap into and increase its customer base.
• After shifting towards 5G, Ufone can then not only provide the best quality services like
audio, and video calls without interruption, stream videos without interruption, and

5
provide many more benefits to the young customers whose lives are becoming faster and
faster and need companies that cater them and their needs of fast connectivity.
• Ufone can then also target enterprises and other businesses with 5 G-related applications
specifically built for industries, as well as collaborate with them, for example,
telemedicine solutions for the healthcare sector.

V. What do we have to do to play a role?

The work that needs to be done to achieve success involves:

Systems: Ufone should adopt a system of decentralization that will encourage employees to
come up with unique and innovative ideas that can bring change and profitability to the
company. HR system should improve the hiring procedure, diversification is important because it
can bring in new ideas and expertise. Ufone should hire more professionals and experts who can
apply their knowledge and experience to help Ufone achieve its goals. Ufone should conduct
training and awareness programs for the employees to be up-to-date with the latest advancements
in the telecom industry.

Quality management services: By setting benchmarks, developing step-by-step processes, and

maintaining quality in routine operations, quality management services can help Ufone comply
with international standards.

Risk Management: Ufone should initiate a risk management department which will cater to the
risks that are involved in pursuing the latest technologies, the political and governmental rules,
and restrictions, and the growing inflation and currency rate changes.

6
VI. What do we do next?

Ufone can take following next steps to execute the new direction:

• Resource allocation: First is resource allocation for the investment in 5G technology, R

& D and development of UFONE KIOSK. Technology such as artificial intelligence (AI)
and SD-WAN can enable company to provide new services to the customers. Also,
resources should be allocated for the marketing of the innovations happening in the
company.

• Infrastructure investments: radio towers, fiber optic networks and data centers:
Ufone should invest in making all the transmission of connection to optic fibers for fast
transmission in not only the cities but also in rural areas to cater that segment of the
market.
• Media and Social media tracking: Company employees should be given task of keenly
observing the trends in the market and discuss any change in the trends so that the
company responds to it in no time. Also, through AI social media trends and discussions
of tech savvy segment should be noted to have a keen eye on bigger picture.
