missing percentage corresponds to the Urban Zone with (8.32%).
The quaternary period began 2.6 million years ago and extends into the present.
The Neogene Period encompasses the interval between 23 million and 2.6 million
years ago. Cretaceous Period, in geologic time, the last of the three periods of
the Mesozoic Era. The Cretaceous began 145.0 million years ago and ended 66

Edaphology
The types of dominant Soil in the municipality of Coatepec and their quantities are:
Andosol (40.01%), Luvisol (35.55%), Phaeozem (11.69%), Vertisol (3.57%), and
Leptosol (0.86%).The missing percentage corresponds to the Urban Zone with
(8.32%).

Andosols are highly porous,

dark-coloured soils
developed from parent
material of volcanic origin,
such as volcanic ash, tuff,
and pumice.
Luvisols are technically
characterized by a surface
accumulation of humus
overlying an extensively
leached layer that is nearly
devoid of clay and
iron-bearing minerals.
Phaeozems are
characterized by a
humus-rich surface layer
covered in the natural state
with abundant grass or
deciduous forest vegetation.
Vertisols are characterized
by a clay-size-particle
content of 30 percent or
more by mass in all horizons (layers) of the upper half-metre of the soil profile.
Finally, Leptosols are soils with a very shallow profile depth (indicating little
influence of soil-forming processes), and they often contain large amounts of
gravel.

5
Physiography
Province: Neovolcanic Axis (95.55%) and Southern Gulf Coastal Plain (4.45%)
Sub-province: Chiconquiaco (77.01%), Lagos and Anahuac volcanoes (18.54%)
and Veracruz Coastal Plain (4.45%)
Topoforms system (Set of landforms associated according to some structural and/or
degradative pattern or patterns): Basalt hillocks (77.01%), volcanic mountain range
with stratum volcanoes or stratovolcanoes isolated (18.54%) and Lomerío typical
(4.45%)

Here we can see the clear divisions of the Physiography, taken from the Inegi
Website.

rains all year round (35%), temperate humid with rains throughout the year (16%),
warm sub-humid with rains in summer (6%) and semi-cold humid with abundant
rains in summer (1%).

Temperature Range 10 – 24°C

Precipitation Range 1 100 – 2 100 mm

7
Hydrology

(98.85%)and R. Idolos (1.15%)
Water Currents: Perennes:
Pixquiac Intermittent: Atopa,
Gavilán, Paso Panal (Naranjos),
Pintores, Sordo and Tenexapa.

It is watered by four permanent

streams: Pixquiac, Los Pintores,
Sordo and Hueyapan, all
tributaries of the Los Pescados or
La Antigua river.

8
Flora
