Method:
Ten food items were selected from the grocery store or home. The nutrition facts on the food
label were read. The chart was filled out for each food label by recording the quantities of the
various substances present. The food items were analyzed and compared.

Discussion:
A nutrient is a substance used by an organism to survive, grow and reproduce. The categories of
nutrients are carbohydrates, protein, fat, water, vitamins and minerals. The main function of
carbohydrates is to provide the body with energy, two examples of carbohydrates are milk and
bread. The main function of proteins is to help repair and build your body's tissue, two examples
of proteins are fish and eggs. A function of fats is that it helps with normal growth and
development by providing essential fatty acids, two examples of fats are butter and oil. The main
functions of water are to protect body organs and tissues and carry nutrients and oxygen to the
cells, two examples of water are distilled and tap water. Vitamins are needed for normal cell
function, growth and development, two examples of vitamins are Vitamin A and Vitamin D.
Minerals are needed for keeping your bones, muscles, heart and brain working properly, two
examples of minerals are calcium and sodium. Food labels tell consumers about the ingredients
and nutritional composition of packaged food for sale. They are important because they provide
warnings and important information about the ways to use the products. From the information
presented on the table, skittles provides the most energy and Oreo provides the most protein.
Conclusion:
From the information presented on the chart, the foods with the most carbohydrates were
suppligen and oreo. The most protein-rich food was Oreo. Lastly, the food with the greatest
amount of fat was Jif peanut butter.
