Background & Purpose

BACKGROUND
Gulali, an Indonesian traditional lollipop candy, is mostly made from melted granulated sugar.
This popular snack brings us back to our childhood memories of its sweet taste and unique shapes,
such as the shapes of animals, flowers, or even abstract objects. Gulali makes imagination, and its
long wooden stick helps us hold it and keep it until the last lick.

Life is supposed to be like Gulali, always perceived as attractive and sweet until it ends. It is a journey
between gratitude and patience, unshakeable because of the sturdy bond. Mostly, women preserve
an independent, tough personality. Hence, understanding how they sense life teaches us how to deal
with our existence.

Merah Delima 2022 with the theme “GULALI” is the annual art exhibition, especially for female
professors, staff, and children, held by the School of Creative Industries-Telkom University.
We humbly invite you to join the event. Let’s celebrate life by sharing your inspiring artwork.

Gulali symbolizes determination and principles in living life and is not
easily swayed by anything, and can give a taste of both the bitterness
and sweetness of life. A sturdy candy stick symbolizes the strength of life
—mental and physical—and can represent the metamorphosis of a woman.
