Activity 2

Directions: Answer the question comprehensively. Limit your response to 300 words.

1. Discuss the plurality of English and its implications to society and language teaching.

Plurality of English have 2 parts, Linguistic universals and universal grammar and English vs
Englishes. Noam Chomsky's universal grammar theory proposes that the capacity to learn
grammar is integrated into the human brain from birth, regardless of language. According to this
"universal grammar theory," every language shares some of the same rules. Every language,
for example, has a way to ask a question or make a negative statement. Furthermore, every
language has a way of indicating gender or indicating whether something occurred in the past or
present. Since all languages have the same basic grammar rules, a child only needs to obey the
collection of rules that his peers do in order to learn and produce their native language. To put it
another way, his environment decides the language he can use, however he is born with the
tools to effectively learn any language. The word "English" comes from Anglisc, the language of
the Angles, who were one of three Germanic tribes who invaded England in the fifth century.
The English language has also had a global impact thanks to American pop culture, music,
movies, ads, and television shows. In the early twenty-first century, English is unquestionably
the most commonly spoken language on the planet: it is the language of formal and informal
exchanges in many nations, the primary instrument of globalization, and the default option for
transnational communication. Currently, English is spoken as a first language (L1) or as an
unofficial or institutionalized second language (L2) in fields such as administration, law, and
education in approximately 75 territories. Since new varieties of English are continuously being
created and found, determining the total number of Englishes in the world is difficult.
Everywhere we go people knows basic English and its other uses. Its handy for tourists and
locals whenever we go to other countries.
