Lab safety rules and symbols are
needed so that people working in
the lab do not injure themselves
and protect them from danger.

Fire Extinguisher
• Fire extinguisher is used to put out fire
that block the escape exit or to protect
properties.
• Nevertheless, make sure you was being
trained and skilled to use extinguisher
during emergencies. Otherwise, just
escape!
• REMEMBER! Your life is more valuable
compared to property.
Fire Extinguisher Classification

TYPE OF FIRE
Solid
A (Wood, paper & textiles)

Flammable liquids
B (Ethanol, methanol)

Flammable gases
C (Hydrogen, methane)

Reactive metals
D (Sodium, lithium)

Electrical contact
E
Cooking oils & fats
F
• Remember P-A-S-S
• P: Pull the pin (tarik pin)
• A: Aim the hose at the
base of the fire (halakan
muncung ke arah dasar
api)
• S: Squeeze the handle
(tekan pemegang)
• S: Sweep the hose
across the fire (sapu ke
arah kiri dan kanan api)

Activities arrangement tips –

clean and tidy

Wash your own lab apparatus –

don’t simply put there
Washing and Cleaning Lab
Glassware/Plasticware

• Always clean your glassware/plasticware and apparatus

immediately after use
• It is much easier to clean the glassware before the residues in
them become dry and hard (plus you are more likely to remember
what the item was used for to decide what will clean it best). If
dirty glassware cannot be washed immediately, put it in water to
soak.
• Handle glassware carefully when cleaning it, as the soap and water
will make it slippery
• Be sure to rinse off all soap or detergent residue after washing
glassware to prevent any possible contamination later.
• Please dry your glassware/plasticware and apparatus properly
PCR Room
• PCR machines – can only book on that
day
• Benchwork – clean and tidy
• Gel – discarded into yellow bin
• Electrophoresis buffer discarded into
black container.
• Image analyzer – gel, email
• Gel preparation area
Main lab

• Postgraduate sitting area, DNA and

Pre-PCR – clean and tidy
• DNA extraction kit – discarded if
empty
• Log book for instruments
• Tips – empty
• Balancer – log book, clean
• PCR products – labeling, don’t keep too
long
• After office hours (6pm onwards), need
to write on log book, borang kebenaran,
cannot be alone (include weekend)
Others • Do not let outsiders into our lab
• Petal lock
• Pantry room – expired foods at fridge,
duty of cleanliness
• Last person who leave HGC should lock
all the doors and switch off electricity.
Clothing

• Wear:
• Goggles/safety Do NOT Wear:
glasses • Sandals
• Closed-toed shoes • Jewelry
• Lab coat • Loose or Baggy
• Tie back long hair clothing
• Glove
Lab Safety
Equipment
• Shower wash (PCR room)
• Eye wash (Cytogenetic lab & Main
Lab)
• First Aid Kit (Cytogenetic lab)
• Fire extinguisher (Corridor HGC)
• Chemical spill kit (Cytogenetic lab)
Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE)
• Lab coat
• Safety eye wear (goggles)
• Glove
• Shoes
Electrical Equipment
• Always do a visual check on
electrical equipment before use,
looking for obvious wear or defects
• All portable electrical equipment
must have a current “PAT test”
sticker
• NEVER use defective equipment
General Tidiness
• Keep your workplace tidy
• Clear up waste, deal with washing up
and put things away as you finish with

X
them
• Make sure everything is safe before
you leave things unattended
• A tidy laboratory avoids accidents to
everyone
Chemical Safety
• Read and understand the
properties of chemicals used
• Always refer to Material /
Chemical Safety Datasheet
(MSDS / CSDS)
• Consider all chemicals as
dangerous substances
Waste Materials
• First ask your safety officer/ science
officer/ lab assistant where/how to
dispose of waste.
• All sharps/needles must be
disposed in plastic sharps
containers
• Any toxic chemicals e.g. Syber
Green (from PCR gels) should be
disposed of carefully

BIOLOGICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT
Expired or Unsuitable to Use Chemicals

• Report to lab staff so appropriate action

will be taken.
• Chemical will be disposed into sewage
system or sent to UKKPU, USM.
• REMINDER! Do not dispose the chemical
into sewage system if there is any doubt.
Accidents and Injuries

attention immediately.
Steps to handle accidents in the laboratory
Steps to handle accidents in the laboratory
What to Do in Case of an Accident:
Always inform safety committee about all accidents immediately!!!
Broken glass:
• Do not pick up broken glass with your fingers! Get a broom and dust pan.
• Sweep the broken glass into the dust pan and dump it into the specially
marked containers provided in each lab.
Small chemical spill:
• Wipe up liquid spills (Blood, Acid, alkaline solution, etc) with paper towels
and dispose of them
• Solids should be dissolved in water, if possible, and wiped up.
• Otherwise, sweep them up with a broom and a dust pan and dispose of them
as your instructor suggests.
• In all cases, after the chemical spill has been wiped up, rinse the area with
water to make sure that all residual chemicals have been removed.
Large chemical spill:
• Move away from the area of the spill. CHEMICAL SPILL KITS CAN ALSO BE
USED FOR SMALL CHEMICAL SPILL
• Warn the people around you LOUDLY.
Chemical splash in your face, goggles on: If the goggles have
protected your eyes, DON’T TAKE YOUR GOGGLES OFF! Yell for
help. Go to the nearest sink or eye wash station and rinse your
face quickly with the goggles still on. Then remove the goggles and
rinse your face again.

Chemical splash or broken glass in your face, goggles off: If this sort
of accident happens, you may not be able to see well enough to go
to the nearest sink or eye wash station on your own. YELL LOUDLY
FOR HELP and cooperate with anyone who comes to your aid.

Large splash of dangerous chemical on your clothing and/or body:

Quickly follow this procedure while continuously YELLING FOR
HELP:
• A. Move away from the area where the spill occurred (you
don't want to get more chemical on you).
• B. CALL LOUDLY FOR HELP and to warn others to stay away
from the spill!
• C. Remove any contaminated clothing.
• D. Use the safety shower. (The treatment for chemical
exposure is 15 minutes under cold running water, or as long
as you can stand it.)
MSDS: document with data regarding the
properties of a particular substance.

It is intended to provide workers and

emergency personnel with procedures for
handling or working with that substance
in a safe manner, and includes
information such as physical data (melting
point, boiling point, flash point, etc.),
toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity,
storage, disposal, protective equipment,
and spill-handling procedures.

MSDS are available in the Stock Room and

on-line.
