MORI OGAI MEMORIAL MUSEUM

Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan

The literary legend Mori Ogai's life is honored at the Mori Ogai Memorial Museum. From

his work as a novelist, playwright, literary critic, translator, and army surgeon, we can view

artifacts and autographed manuscripts. On the location of MORI Ogai's former dwelling

"Kancho-Ro," the Bunkyo City Mori Ogai Memorial Museum debuted in 2012, the 150th

anniversary of the artist's birth.

The 1,360m² structure comprises two above ground and two below ground levels. In

order to lessen the effects of outside disturbances like heat and earthquakes, storage rooms are

situated in the basement. Arup handled the security, structural, mechanical, electrical, public

health and fire engineering for the museum.

A large exhibition hall with exposed concrete walls and ceilings was created using a

reinforced concrete bearing wall system. The end product is a structure that appears

straightforward but has meticulously designed interiors that set up a dramatic narrative.

Simple and elegant solutions were developed by Arup's MEP experts to help make the

area appealing to visitors and resource-effective to maintain and operate. All of the lighting

fixtures, security cameras, gas fire-extinguishing heads, and smoke detectors are buried in the

exposed ceiling in order to conceal the building services, which include an MEP panel system.
Ultraviolet damage and energy consumption are decreased including using LED lights.

Additionally installed for greater building performance were daylight sensors, a solar

photovoltaic system, and a rainwater reuse system.

The displays are protected from water damage in the case of a fire by a gas

fire-extinguishing system, but because it does not meet the standards for statutory smoke

extraction, a performance-based approach was used to guarantee the safety of the exhibits and

the occupants.
