B10 Plant and Animal Organs & Organ Systems Feb 27, 2021

HOMEWORK

1. Describe how an organism is broken down into smaller components. Use an

example.

Organisms is broken down into smaller components through the organs from the
Digestive System that are specialized to do a specific task. It uses chemical and
mechanical processes to breakdown the food making it easier to distribute the
nutrients to the blood and throughout the body where it is needed. For example,
Polysaccharides, or carbohydrate sugars, breakdown into monosaccharides

2. Describe the chain of events that would occur in an organism if there was a
malfunction in either the circulatory or nervous system.

When there is a malfunction in either circulatory or the nervous system, there will
be instances that some organs will fail to function properly and will slowly die
making the person’s life go at risk. It will cause multiple failures into the major
organs of the human body like the heart, lungs, and kidneys.

3. Fill in the following table:

Major Organs Primary Function

Lungs, Trachea,
Responsible for breathing. It is
Respiratory Bronchi, Nose,
responsible for bringing oxygen through
System Mouth, Voice box,
inhaling and sending out carbon dioxide
Throat
through exhaling.

Stomach, Small and

Digestive Large Intestines, It breaks food into tiny molecules
System Rectum, Gallbladder, (nutrients) and absorbs
Pancreas, Liver them into the bloodstream.

Skeletal Bones, Tendons, Supports and protects the body especially

System Ligaments the organs. It maintain posture
and body position

It coordinate and control actions of

Nervous Brain, Spinal Cord, internal organs and body systems by
System Nerves and other sending and receiving messages in
Sensory nerves response to stimuli.

It transports blood around the body, which

Circulatory Heart, Veins, Arteries, is the medium that carries oxygen
System Capillaries necessary for respiration, carbon dioxide,
nutrients, waste products, immune
components, and hormones.

4. Describe the importance of size as it relates to plant organs. What structures

do plants have that allow them to carry out their life functions?

The size of plant organs, such as leaves and flowers, is determined by genotype-
environmental interactions. To make strategic use of limited resources and
compete with neighbors, plants must calibrate their growth to environmental
conditions. The right regulation of growth ensures the proper functioning of vital
organs for life and reproduction. Depending on how many cells an organism has,
it performs various life functions. A single-celled organism has a single cell that
performs all of the organism's functions. The multicellular organism, on the other
hand, has several cells, but does not perform every feature of life on its own.
Instead, the cells work together to fulfill the tasks of the organism's life.

5. List 3 different functions for each plant organ (excluding flowers).

a. Stem – it holds and support the fruit and flowers
- transports fluids in xylem (water and minerals) and phloem
(sugars) tissue between the leaves and roots
-stores nutrients

b. Leaves - act as a storage for food and water

- it is where transpiration takes place
- it is where photosynthesis takes place

c. Root - Roots anchor the plant in the soil

- Store food
- Absorbs mineral and water
