When a whole is divided into a number of equal parts, then each part is called a fraction of the
whole. The whole can be a region or a collection.

A fraction is made up of two numbers, written one above the other and separated by a horizontal line.
1 5 2
eg. , ,
2 9 7

Numerator : The number written above the horizontal line is called the numerator. It gives
value to the fraction.
Denominator : The number written below the horizontal line is called the denominator. It tells us
how many equal parts the whole is divided into. It gives name to the fraction.
