EFFECTIVENESS OF COCONUT SHELL AS ALTERNATIVE FLOOR TILES

I. Source of Technology
The researchers aim to develop floor tiles using coconut shells. This project will
have natural resin as its binding component for it is biodegradable and non-toxic.
The researchers will conduct this study to prove the overall effectiveness and
efficiency of coconut shells as floor tiles. The project sounds simple but still needs long time
preparation and researcher’s effort to build the project creatively

II. Introduction

Background of the Study

The world produces more waste as it becomes more and more technologically
advance. This situation causes different environmental problems like pollution, acid rain,
ozone layer depletion and climate change. The problem with this system is that this does not
take environmental well-being into account. Nowadays, an abundance of natural resources
are being exhausted and unsustainable levels of pollution are being produced.
Coconut shell, an agricultural waste and is available in plentiful quantities
throughout tropical countries worldwide. While some people use coconut shells for making
charcoal, most of them are just thrown away and are subjected to open burning which
contributes significantly to CO2 and methane emissions. While it’s clearly due to human
activities, humans also are the most affected and at the same time humans also are the ones to
solve those environmental problems. Instead of burning coconut shells, it can turn into usable
materials. Coconut shell may offer itself as a potential construction material in the field of
construction industries and would solve the environmental problem of reducing the
generation of solid wastes simultaneously. Coconut shell is often used as a composite in
concrete because of the characteristics found in it better than material that commonly used in
production of concrete. Coconut shell has high strength and modulus properties along with
the added advantage of high lignin content.
With the above statements, the researchers would like to develop product that is
made of coconut shell to lessen the said environmental problems. Also, the researchers will
be using natural resin as binding components for it is biodegradable and non-toxic.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of coconut shells as floor tiles.

1. Is coconut shell along with natural resin strong enough to be used as floor tiles?
2. Are the materials to be used effective and safe?
3. Will the said product impact the environment immediately?

Objectives
The main objective of this project is to be able to develop project that will not
contribute to environmental problems.

Specific Objectives:
1. To lessen carbon footprint.
2. To turn waste into useful materials.
3. To help people and environment by recycling material.

Significance of the Study

The result of this research project will give information regarding the effectiveness of
coconut shells as floor tiles. The findings of the study will mean the following:
Students. This study can empower and provide understanding about hydroponic systems.
This can also serve as reference in their future experiments and studies.
Mechanical Engineering Students. ME students could adapt some techniques in data
gathering and research design parallel to the study.
Future Researchers. The result of this study can serve as basis on further study about
environment and recycling. This will help the future researchers to gain more knowledge and
develop new projects that are made of recycled materials.
People. This study can make people more aware about what is happening in our planet and
will give them idea on how to lessen or prevent environmental problems.

Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on developing floor tiles using natural resin and coconut shell and
determining its effectiveness.
